Re: pigs in the blanket????
I dont think we are *supposed* to have hot dogs.
That being said I eat whatever I want with the exception of sushi and alcohol.
I just make sure I know where my food is coming from and how it is cooked.
I made my own pigs in a blanket the other day and they were awesome!

Re: pigs in the blanket????
I know we are not supposed to have hot dogs because of the nitrates, so probably not!

Re: pigs in the blanket????
I think the concern is that they are pre-cooked, like cold cuts, so most people won't heat them enough to kill everything. So, if you are preparing them yourself I think you should be able to eat them if you let them cook in the oven long enough.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
I think you can in moderation. If you are making them yourself, why not buy nitrate free hot dogs and cut them into cocktail size.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
Wait, I'm confused...I thought that the problem with hot dogs was the listeriosis concern? I mean boo on nitrates too, but I thought hot dogs were down for the same reason as cold cuts?

Re: pigs in the blanket????
my doctor told me that hotdogs & bacon are ok in moderation, as long as they are FULLY cooked. I did have some pigs in a blanket around Christmas time, but I made them myself and was sure to cook them thoroughly. I do have bacon every once in a while too.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
I've had hot dogs and pigs in a blanket several times! My doctor said it wasn't a concern.
Like anything, it depends on what you are comfortable with.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
Yeah I totally wasn't thinking about that today when I had sausage, I just made sure it was cooked properly. I just checked the package and it has nitrates. Crap! I hate all these rules!

Re: pigs in the blanket????
my doctor said everything in moderation, just no sushi or alcohol. i had some pigs in a blanket over christmas. my dr's exact phrase was "you're pregnant, not sick, you can eat anything... just in moderation" lol.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
My OB never mentioned anything about hot dogs, bacon, sausage, etc. after being on this site, I brought the topic up to him. He is a pretty up to date and laid back doctor (which is part of the reason I like him) and he didn't seem all that concerned.
He said that you should limit your nitrates even when not pregnant because they aren't good for you in general but while pregnant the only concern is that the fat and salt content is usually high.
I know when I eat bacon I feel slightly swollen because I retain a little bit of water, but it was my understanding that it wasn't the worst thing I could consume.
I avoided EVERYTHING in the first trimester and then I started to become a little more comfortable and now the only things I still watch is my caffeine. I avoid alcohol and undercooked/raw meat/fish at all costs.
It's all about your comfort level and what your doctor says.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
You can have them as long as they are heated to steaming - and they are definitely a moderation thing due to the nitrates, although you can buy nitrate free hot dogs. Prepackaged pigs in blanket will most likely have nitrates though.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
My doctor never said anything about hot dogs or bacon. My SIL's doctor said she could eat all beef hot dogs. So, as long as I know they are all beef, I eat them.

Re: pigs in the blanket????
As long as the hot dogs are nitrate-free you should be fine. My husband took me on a wild goose chase last night to find nitrate-free hot dogs!
