Re: Plane crash spinoff - women and children first?
Posted by browneyedgirl
i completely agree with it. men are more capable of helping others since they are typically stronger, and may be able to take care of themselves more than a woman can. women and children should always go first, followed by men. i know my husband is significantly stronger than i am and could help a lot more than i could.
and i'll be honest. i would be BEYOND PROUD of my husband if he gave his life to help others, especially women and children. to know he gave his life to help others would help me. if i knew he was selfish in order to save himself, i would have a different view of him. of course i want my husband here, but to know he acted heroically would be amazing. i know that HE would never get off a plane if there were women and children still on board. i know he would give his life for others.
old fashioned values are gone in this world. it's quite sad.
I totally agree with what you said here....

I know if my DH was on the plane- he would want to help people that needed him - and he is a big strong guy that should be helping people that needed help - like the lady with 2 childern
so I totally agree and think women and childern first- not b/c they are more important- b/c they might need more assistance
I just think it's ironic that these people had a perfect rescue and they are being questioned for it - that says more to me about society then the fact that they helped each other word for word - exactly my respose.

I'll be honest- it depends on the severity of the situation/nature of emergency. Trying to suss out the women and children might slow down people getting out.
Once out, then I agree the women and children and injured should have been taken onto the rescue boats/rafts/etc first.
i recently had a discussion about this and this was what was brought up sometimes you need to just get people out
and also i heard in this particular plane rescue it was not women and children first yet everyone was rescued and safe thank god

i think if the only caretaker of the child is male then with child that male then goes first with the women and children.

The truth is, generally speaking, women simply aren't as strong as men. We can argue all we want, but physically and biologically this is a fact of life and there's no getting around it. I think many men, including my husband, would stay back because they know they have more strength and endurance to survive longer in harsher circumstances, as opposed to most women.
ITA!! Its completely biological - for instance men have greater muscle mass, aside from it giving them more strength it also speeds up their metabolism causing them to generate more heat - thus why men are usually warmer. In conditions such as those a man can withstand extreme temps better than a woman or a child can.

Re: Plane crash spinoff - women and children first?
It's so odd - but in this particular situation - a plane landing in water, my husband and I discussed it and we decided I would go off first with the baby because I am the stronger swimmer. I am also in better shape than my husband because I work out regularly and he does not. Yes he is stronger, but I have much more physical endurance. So, I don't think that it always applies that men are stronger.
However, I would be so disappointed in my husband if he got off that plane before any other parent that was trying to get their child off that plane safely. To me, children are innocent and depend on adults for safety and protection. If anyone on that plane or in an emergency situation would let a child die to save their own a** I would find that disturbing...

I have no children, however I would still expect a child and parent to go before me, thats just the way things work!

Re: Plane crash spinoff - women and children first?
I disagree with it.... and I also don't agree that men have better endurance than women.... that's another generalization
a fit woman in her 20's or 30's will defintely have better endurance than a man who is older, ill, or more sedentary. she likely will even be physically stronger. only a fit young man is stronger than a fit young woman.... their endurance is likely similar.
IMO, children first, adults next. why not parents next? because many adults are parents, yet their kids are not with them....
