So this starts next month in Nassau and unlike Suffolk we won't have the option to buy plastic bags at the register. I know I'm going to forget to bring my tote bags with me every time I shop and am envisioning myself at CVS shoving huge shampoo/conditioner and cosmetics in my pocketbook when I ring up. And when I buy a ton of clothes at Kohls or Target, I'll just be walking out hugging a big pile of clothes. LOL I am all for saving the environment so I'm not complaining, it will just take some getting used to.

I think they will have paper bags as an option no? I saw CVS is already doing this.

If I'm not mistaken, counties have the option of charging for paper bags. Nassau isn't forcing stores to charge for paper, but Suffolk is charging 5 cents for paper bags. So, I think you can ask for a paper bag.

Re: Plastic bag ban

I am in no and they changed to paper bags that wrap before they get into your cart, let alone to your car or home, so I bought bags. I keep them in my purse, my car, my house.

I'm almost positive they just charge you for paper bags- 5 cents each. But it's paper not plastic.

I have dozens of those reusable totes but I have a feeling I'm going to have a whole lot more for when I forget and just buy some at the register.

I'm in Suffolk, and when it went into effect, it took me a while to always remember to take the Tote bags from my car.

I usually never forget them. But yes, it does take some getting used to.

Half the times I pack those totes with so much; you can hurt your back from carrying it. So half the times, I pack stuff loose in my cart, and then pack it loose in my car. I carry a laundry basket in the trunk....to hold stuff from falling.

Nobody in NY State will have the option to buy plastic bags at the register anymore after 3/1.

I’m sure most places will have a bunch of reusable bags for sale by the register for those who forget their bags.

I’ve bought some reusable bags already (they were on sale at the supermarket) and I just keep them in the back of my car.

I highly recommend envirosax. They're a little pricey but I've had mine for over 10 years and they've held up great. They roll up super easily and I just keep a few in my purse for unexpected shopping trips or target or whatever. I stil use regular reusable bags for groceries but these are perfect for everything else.

The Walmart by my house is not offering paper bags at all. There are just zero bags. People are walking out with armfuls. I am terrible at remembering my bags. I better get a bigger purse!

I can buy a plastic bag for 5 cents in Suffolk but sometimes I'm too cheap LOL
So I walk out carrying stuff in my arms.
Or my purse is pretty big- like a tote bag. So i can throw stuff in there.

Is there an online site to purchase the reusable bags in bulk?

I have Bag Podz that I purchased from The Grommet and I always get asked about them. I like that it comes with the storage bag (easy to leave in the car and clip to the cart when I get to the supermarket) and I can throw them in the wash. I usually have one bag separately in my work tote as well.

McD's switched to paper straws. It shook me. I loved their slightly wider than normal plastic straws. The soda always tasted better through them. I actually read something once about why the fountain soda tasted better at McDs and there was several reasons but the straws were one of them .
The paper straws are gross. I hate how they feel in my mouth. Its akin to that feeling of nails on a chalk board for me. It gives me chills. Then it starts to dissolve and loose its shape in the liquid and renders itself useless.
I have to remember to start carrying plastic straws in my purse along with my Truvia packets that I carry for coffee!

Get a reusable straw (stainless or silicone). Or just don’t use one.

Some of these posts, why do you people hate the environment? These are a bunch of very small and simple changes to get used to.

Re: Plastic bag ban

I’m in Suffolk. It took me a long time to get used to the reusable bag thing and I still kinda hate the inconvenience. I’d also feel a lot better about charging us for the bags if it went straight to. An environmental cause but that’s a whole other story.

I originally bought a bunch of those big bags from bed bath and homegoods. They carry heavy items well and are that wipeable material - like a vinyl. But they are so bulky and take up half my trunk. So now I purchased these other bags. Smaller and fold into themselves. I’m slowly replacing all my big bags with these to get space back in my trunk. I also always keep one in my purse so I’m never caught w/o one

PS we have a retail business in Nassau and have yet been given any instruction on how to go forward. It’s all very confusing when you read it online. All is zero plastic but nassau doesn’t have to charge the 5 cents. Then it’s everyone has to charge. Then it’s NYC is 10 cents?? And then those who are on public assistance don’t get charged at all. We have to comply or we get fined. Trying to get real info ASAP so we’re set. If we have to charge, we will set up a jar of nickels for our customers to take from to pay for them.

[ETA: I tried to link the bags here a few times. Links not working.
I got them off amazon
Search Foldable Reusable Grocery Bags.
The ones I purchased hold up to 50lbs each and was like $15 for 6 of them.

Oh yes I completely hate the environment Chat Icon . Do you seriously think it's the straws and bags destroying it???? Couldn't possibly have anything to do with the Industrial Revolution???? And I don't know you personally, so not attacking you , but I find the people who complain about straws have 2,000+ sq ft houses, drive Minivans & huge SUV's ( just see how many when the car posts come up) have multiple kids who they shuttle to every imaginable activity in said Mininvans...come on. With that said, I'm all for these bans, but it's not really the problem.

Re: Plastic bag ban

I have the baggu bags and I got them on amazon. I like that they fold into themselves so they are small and I can keep them in my driver’s side door and my pocketbook. While the bigger bags are nice, they took up too much room in my trunk and I would forget them half of the time.

To answer the other poster about the environment, I’ve recycled and reused stuff for decades now. One thing parents of babies in diapers can do is flush the poop. Less poop in landfills means less methane gas.

Yeah I hate the environment too.
I hope to use 4 plastic straws for every 1 paper straw I see.
I am hoping to live in a pod somewhere with no environment.
Because I hate the environment soooo much.

Aren't the other bag options just as bad/possibly worse than the plastic bags we've been using? I keep reading articles that say this. If we're looking to protect the environment, buying mass quantities of reusable bags isn't much better.

I also read that the factories that make those god awful paper straws that are dissolving into mush in drinks everywhere- are polluting the environment and causing more damage than the plastic straws themselves- so, yeah.
I don't know what the answer is to be honest.

I hate paper straws, they don’t withhold and who enjoys swallowing mushy paper with their drink. Gross.
