Re: Plastic bag ban
You know what else kills me? The excessive packaging from Amazon. Last week I ordered 2 make up items because I was running out and was too lazy to go to the store. One was a small concealer- the size of a lipstick. The other was a brow gel- in a tube the size of a lip gloss tube. They came separately - one was in a HUGE box, the other in the plasticy mailer bag that amazon sends. The one in the box was surrounded by those packaging air pillows Tons of them. When you pop the air out of them to make them fit in the garbage it flattened down into a ton of plastic. It was insanely wasteful.

Omg Amazon packaging is insane. Sometimes I don’t know what it is because the boxes are so darn big I can’t imagine that it’s my order.

I hate visiting LI now. No bags, paper straws, what next?
McD's switched to paper straws. It shook me. I loved their slightly wider than normal plastic straws. The soda always tasted better through them. I actually read something once about why the fountain soda tasted better at McDs and there was several reasons but the straws were one of them . The paper straws are gross. I hate how they feel in my mouth. Its akin to that feeling of nails on a chalk board for me. It gives me chills. Then it starts to dissolve and loose its shape in the liquid and renders itself useless. I have to remember to start carrying plastic straws in my purse along with my Truvia packets that I carry for coffee!
Yeah, this is where i draw the line. MCD straws have always been THE BEST.

Re: Plastic bag ban
It totally depends on which part of the environment you care about. If you care about our oceans, eliminating single use plastics (like straws and plastic grocery store bags) is the way to go. If you care about your carbon footprint and climate change, it turns out that the reusable bags and paper straws actually create more of a carbon footprint. You have to use the average reusable bag over 100 times for it to be equal to the carbon footprint created by single use bags.
For example, my MIL uses a reusable bag at most 5 times and then throws it away because it gets "gross". That is wayyy worse for the environment than single use bags.

I wash mine too, but I personally know there are a lot of people out there that don't. I try very hard to get as many uses as possible out of every bag I buy. Most of the people I know don't though. They reuse them a few times at most. The carbon footprint from creating reusable and even paper bags is terrible for the environment. I'm sure the bans will definitely help keep some plastics out of landfills and the oceans, but the carbon footprint isn't lower at all. It's really just a trade-off.

How should we throw out our garbage? Just throw filthy, rotting, food and raw chicken scraps in a pail in our kitchen? Doesn't sound very sanitary.

Right. Also I use the store plastic bags as garbage bags, always. So now I have to purchase the exact same thing that is banned, plastic garbage bags. If people are still using and buying plastic bags to put their garbage in, how is this ban accomplishing anything?

Ah yes, doggy bags reminded me...I guess we shouldn't use plastic bags to pick up after our dogs either. Maybe you can pick up the dog shit in your bare hands and carry it home to our unlined trash cans. Or maybe they can sell reusable dog shit bags.

I also use them to throw food out. If my garbage can isn’t full, I will bag food waste such as rice so it doesn’t stink and I don’t have to waste a garbage bag.

They do make more environmentally friendly dog poop bags- recycled material, biodegradable, or compostable. I had ones that smelled like lavender! And they're preferable to plastic bags since they don't have random holes in them.

I dont think food in a can is necessarily unsanitary. It might be gross. IMO it should be picked up and brought to the land fill as is. I think we need to come up with better ways to dispose of reg garbage. so its not gross or unsanitary as you mentioned. I dont think banning store bags are the total solution when so many other types of plastic are out there, including bags. People should be encouraged to use reusable coffee cups, even bringing them to the store and getting a discount. I dont put my fruit or veggies in those little bags when I buy them. When i get home I'm washing them anyway.
The human race has known for 20 or more years the impact WE are causing on this planet we share yet we are still slow to make mandated laws to stop the destruction

Plastic bag ban
Ok so now that paper bags would be used instead of plastic, why weren't these the alternative from the get go? Why not just offer the paper bags and not charge the .05. Now they are going to provide paper and still charge?

Not an answer , but more like a comment...I don't know how old most of you ladies on this thread are, but I think it's funny how when I was a kid all the bags in stores were paper, but then they decided that was ruining the environment and we went to plastic!!!! Anybody else this old???

Me! All the double bagging at the grocery store. And using the bags for book covers lol.
I think there is a $0.05 fee for the paper bags though starting on 3/1.

Re: Plastic bag ban
I think the ban on plastic bags is a good start but we probably produce just as much garbage with all the other stuff ; the individual packaging for literally everything. This is prob the only thing they can control more easily without screwing up all the million dollar corporations- I can’t even imagine what a solution would be- start filling up our own glass jars at supermarkets for , like, everything? Make our own juice and don’t buy pre made juices in containers? How bout shampoos? Baby food? squeeze pouches? The cartons for eggs. Storage bins. The hundreds of different sizes and brands of water bottles and ziplock bags.... sheesh
Kinda cool that they’re figuring out ways to make clothes out of recycled water bottles etc but I mean do you like knowing that you’re wearing somebody’s sprite can on your behind lol
my heads spinning - but this isn’t a secret. Nothing new. Just no solutions and increased awareness
Sorry if all this has been said- prob should read all comments before I post mine lol
I try and bring my beach bags in the car with me and load them up at the supermarket etc. or I might start leaving the big plastic storage bins in my trunk and just using those to bring stuff in and out.

Yeah, exactly. I can't stand it. I always forget the bags. And nothing gets me more crazy than when the cashier asks "oh? you wanted a bag? I already totaled the sale." Um...I have 34 things. Did you want me to carry them on my frickan head on the way out across the parking lot?
