Playtex Drop Ins vs. Dr. Brown's bottles for gassy/colicky newborn?
Please let me know, from your experience, which bottle you believe helps gassy/colicky babies more. We currently use the Playtex Drop Ins, Mylicon and Little Tummys, but our DS keeps getting those pains and crying fits - usually from about 9pm to 2 or 3am.
I'm about to order the Dr. Brown's bottles to try, but I just want to see what the general concensus is to see if it might really (hopefully) make a difference.
Thanks!

Dr. Browns worked for me, and my BFF who had 2 preemies that were tough eaters.
When I brought DS #1 to the Ped ER for a fever the nurse there told me Dr. Brown's were by far her favorite.
eta: are you FF or pumping? I only ask because my DS #1 wound up having milk protein allergy and being put on Nutramigen. DS #2 had a slight sensitivity to dairy so I cut it out for awhile (I was nursing) and gradually re-introduced it. Good luck!

I'm taking a hiatus from giving DS breast milk right now because the antibiotic I'm on could be increasing his gassiness. He's in so much pain with the gas - I don't want to risk that it's my BM doing it.
We have him on Gentlease right now, which he's been on for a week. We tried to give him Nutramigen, but he was totally on to us and refused it. I would love to try something different, but my doc told us to stay with Gentlease for awhile since he wouldn't take the Nutramigen. Maybe I'll try to give it to him again?

It takes a little bit of time to get the old stuff out of their system so, as long as DS is drinking the Gentlease - I'd stick with that.
DS refused Nutramigen as well - it would've been perfect for him!!!

My friend gave her DS 1/2 Alimentum and 1/2 Similac Sensitive. It worked for him! You could try that with the Nutramigen and Gentlease.

My pediatrician likes platex drop ins for the gassiness. We use them and I'm happy with them. There were bigger issues than gas though, a milk allergy and reflux.

Re: Playtex Drop Ins vs. Dr. Brown's bottles for gassy/colicky newborn?
We found the Dr. Browns worked better for us. DS had such horrible gas and gas pains when he came home. He would scrunch up in his bassinet, wake up screaming at night, have trouble going to sleep because he was in so much pain. I was determined to stay on the Playtex drop-ins because i thought it would be easier with twins. I had to eventually switch to Dr Browns because DD had a feeding issue. We tried them with DS too and he did soooooo much better with the gas on the Dr Browns bottles.

We gave DS Alimentum - it took about 2 weeks to see a major difference. A complete month before it was clear.
I used Platex Ventaire bottles. The curve of the bottle is suppose to help with colic etc...Dr. Browns didn't work for DS.
DS was also on Zantac because his AR was that bad, Mylicon didn't help him.
Hang in there

We were very happy with the Playtex drop ins, BUT you absolutely have to squeeze all the air out of the bag (with your hand or with a flat utensil) before giving baby the bottle. If you don't, that will cause extra gassiness for your DS.

How can I tell if the pains he is feeling is from gas, milk allergy or acid reflux? Is there a difference in the pain faces I'll see? I feel so helpless when he's screaming in that pain!

For me I just knew that something was wrong because DS cried after every single feeding.
To me if he was rested, had a clean diaper and a full belly he should be content. Yet, he would let out these loud screams that would come and go for up to 2 hours after feeding him. They killled me...you could tell he was in so much pain.
People kept telling me it isn't colic - it's just gas. Well, I don't know a single person that gets gas pains for 2 hours after everything they eat. It's something more than just "gas bubbles".
I truly believed it was mother's instinct telling me it was more than "gas". Once I made mention to the ped and we started the course of elimination DS started to get better.
It just took some time to get the right mix (formula, gas medicine, mylanta...etc).
If you think its more than just gas I would speak to your ped sooner rather than later.

Re: Playtex Drop Ins vs. Dr. Brown's bottles for gassy/colicky newborn?
Please don't take this the wrong way but STOP switching his formula! I think that could be the problem too. It takes babies awhile to adjust. Stay with this Gentlease brand and if it gets worse it could be a milk allergy, but talk to your ped about it I also suggested before that if you are giving him any bm it could be an allergy to something you are eating. Babies can be very sensative to dairy in bm, or sicy foods. If you're only doing formula burp him often, and I highly suggest the Tommee Tippee or Mam bottles. I HATED the drop ins and they created colic for my DD. I have no experience with Dr. Brown's. They seemed to complex for my fried mommy brais Also if it's the same time every night that this is happening it sounds more like colic then gas. My dd had a time from 6p-8p where she cried and cried and cried for no reason. It was a horrible 2hrs and lasted until she was 3 months. She was just fussy and nothing helped it.

Re: Playtex Drop Ins vs. Dr. Brown's bottles for gassy/colicky newborn?
My second son was extremely gassy and was so fussy because of it. We stuck with Gentlease, Mylicon and Dr. Brown's bottles. After a few weeks, we were very close to trying Nutramigian (sp?) but decided not to.
The doctor told me that their digestive systems are still maturing and usually bad gas issues will go away by around 12 weeks. That definitely was the case for him - it really was just time that he needed.
A very tight swaddle helped him at night. Also, once he rolled over, we had to stop swaddling, but he slept a lot better because he was on his stomach. I used to let him nap on his stomach during the day - he always had really good head/neck control.

You can try it. But we found no difference in gas/spit up when using the Dr Browns bottles so after about 2 weeks I went back to the Drop ins.
my nieces ped recommended the ventaire bottles and they said they work well.

Re: Playtex Drop Ins vs. Dr. Brown's bottles for gassy/colicky newborn?
I have been using the Dr. Brown bottles since my triplets were born 34 weeks premature and have not encountered a problem with them at all. In fact, my oldest boy does not burp @ every feeding (even though I try forever to burp him ) and he doesn't get gas pains at all. I never tried anything else, so I vote for Dr. Brown's. Good luck!

Bring him to the pediatrician and bring a dirty diaper with you. They test the poop to check for the milk protein allergy.
DD has it and the combination of elecare formula, zantac, gas drops before every feeding, and MAM anti colic bottles is finally doing the trick!
Good Luck!
