Please help - need advice about my cat!

We have a 4 year old male cat. We recently (about 6 weeks ago) put in a cat door in our basement door and put the litter box downstairs in the basement. He learned how to use the door and where the litter box was that night and we have no problems.

Sunday I smelled something in our den and he had pooped underneath a chair Chat Icon I figured he was mad at us, I cleaned it up, and put him in the basement.

On Tuesday, DH went to clean the litter box and there was nothing in there Chat Icon The box is under our basement stairs so there's a chance the cat's "aim" was off. While DH was down there, playing with and petting the cat, he used the litter box to pee and poop.

This morning (Friday) I smelled something again - he had pooped underneath the same chair in the den, but off to the side a bit. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I do not understand. Nothing has changed, other than that our nanny started 2 weeks ago. But she spends all day playing with the kids. I am sure DS plays with the cat during the day like he always does, so I don't think it's an attention thing but who knows?

Any insight? I have two young kids, I can't have crap on my floor Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The only thing I can think of- besides he is stressed over the new nanny in the house- might be that he is sick and trying to let you know.

If it keeps up maybe take him to the vet.
Cats are very good at hiding they are sick- because in the wild it's a sign of weakness to predators. So he might be feeling sick and hiding it and only leaving you a "clue" here and there...

Other than that it cuold be that he is still not used to his box being downstairs now?
Cats are odd beasts!
Good luck!

it could be a sign he is sick

when pokey had crystals- he was trying to pee all over the house

in the laundry basket

on the floor right in front of me

he was telling me he was in trouble- thank god- it saved him

Yup, he's done that before when he had crystals, that's why I didn't think it was the issue this time. But I guess it can't hurt to take him to the vet.

did you change your litter by any chance? I hear some cats are very picky about their litter.
