please help me see it from another perspective

we had a company-wide meeting today. i was on the phone with a participant as the meeting started and didn't hear the beginning.

just a few minutes ago, my director called our dept in for a smaller meeting. he wanted to talk (just our dept) about the bigger meeting. this is when i learned that i missed some vital information.

there is a raise-freeze for 2009. this means that when my anniversary comes around in april, i WILL be evaluated, but no matter how well i've been doing, i will NOT be receiving a raise.

i'm very very sad right now, because i was praying that the merrit raise would give me a little breathing room.

please remind me of the bigger picture and help me get my head out of my a$$ with this pity party i'm having at my desk right now.

He didn't call you into his office to tell you that you're department is being eliminated and your out of a job. I'd say that's heck of a good reason not to be so bummed.

I understand how dissapointing it can be to not get a raise... especially when you worked hard all year and you deserve it.
But that seems to be the norm for companies this year, with the economy the way it is.
As long as you have a job that you like and don't dread going to work, count your blessings.
So many people are either unemployed now or in jobs they hate.

Easier said than done, I know.
Trust me- I have a good job that I generally like and it's safe for now (knock on wood) but I still let the everyday cr@p get to me and I find that I complain about little things- it's normal and can't be helped.

Sorry about the raise though! It does stink!!

I would first be thankful I have a job in this economy.

Then if I was really not that happy, or if I wanted to make more cash, i'd start looking for a new job. It never hurts to simply LOOK for a new job. You aren't making any committments by just looking, or even just interviewing.

I am very happy at my current job, but I went on an interview a few weeks ago and made it to a final interview before being told "I was out of their budget" . I was just curious as to what was out there. I thought interviewing was a great experience. You never know.

I can undestand how difficult it must be to think about..but please remember to be thankful that you have a job in this economy. Your employer is most likely just trying to eliminate the possibility of having to lay people off.

I was laid off in August and still have not found a job yet. It is now 5 months and it's been extremely difficult for DH and I. We got married three weeks after the lay off and it's just put such a damper on our new life together.

RIght before my entire department was laid off..our boss purchased a $15,000 new computer system, and made some other "bad business" decisions. Maybe a few of us would still have our jobs if he'd been thinking the way your boss is.

I'm hopeful that 2009 will bring better things.

I've just gone through a similar situation........my agency does not give out raises, they give out "bonuses". At our weekly manager meetings for the past several months we had been doing "all the math" and figured we surpassed our goal areas so everyone would be getting a little something-something around the holidays. However, the big boss met with us and said no one was at this time. He also alluded a lot to lay-offs. As bummed as I was (I could've used that extra $$$ during my maternity leave) I still feel fortunate to HAVE a job, especially one that is being so accomodating while I am on maternity leave/letting me come back to a more "family friendly" position.

though. I know how much of a let-down it is to count on something and then not have it pan out financially. Sometimes it seems like one can just never get ahead, it's always something!

My company is not giving out raises this year either. It is happening everywhere

My company also is not giving raises either. I had my review in Nov and while I was a little disappointed, I am thankful to still have a job.

We're in advertising and they just want to be very cautious since our many of our clients are cutting their budgets. We're a small shop and they don't want to lay anyone off.

No one got raises this year in our firm. Hopefully this will save hundreds or thousands of jobs.

There were also people who were counting on their bonuses that got nothing.

There were others that got way less than they expected. People were angry.

I'm a little peeved but I told my boss that if it saves some jobs I'm fine with it.

After the IRS wanted 5 figures from me I could have really used that money but the IRS will get their money in time and life goes on.

I'm employed, healthy and will make it through.

You will too! Hang in there.. have your pity party and then move on.
