so scarry I can't even imagine... DH wouldn't let us buy a house with a pool for that very reason. I hope the baby pulls through and all the prayers for that family.

Re: PLEASE HUG YOUR BABIES TONITE **UPDATE Pg1**
I'm glad the baby is doing ok. They were very lucky.
And maybe I'm going to get ripped for this, but I have to ask...Who was watching the 2 kids when they got out of their playpens and got to the pool? I don't understand how these things happen. And even your SIL's best friend, how did a two year manage to dig a hole without anyone seeing her?
I'm sorry but it doesn't take 10-15 seconds for these things to happen. Were the playpens near the pool? And a 2 year old digging a hole? That takes time.
I had a BBQ yesterday and I have a kids pool up-it has like a foot of water, if that much in it. If one kid was near it, 4 adults were beside the pool watching. Adults were by the kids all day. I just get a feeling when you hear of some of these accidents that people are not being cautious. LIke the girl that drowned a couple of weeks ago when the mom went to go to the bathroom. Was the door locked? Were gates up? How did this kid wander to the pool while someone was going to the bathroom?
I'm sorry but I don't understand how some of these accidents occur.

You know what, we ALL think these things, and we all wonder those same things, but I am cautious to be the one to say it aloud...
Until the day (HEaven Forbid) something happens to someone else (even a child going to the ER is enough reason to ask right?) then we say 'but I just turned around for ONE SeCOND.
Do you have toddlers ?
Knock on wood, my toddlers have never been to the ER, knock on wood, nothing serious has happened, but I still refuse to be one of the "better" parents... it can happen to anyone. a child can drown in a inch of water in the tub.

Re: PLEASE HUG YOUR BABIES TONITE **UPDATE Pg1**
Yes I do have a toddler. My daughter is 20 months old and into everything. And yes she has gotten hurt, I'm not saying she hasn't. She's gotten hurt when I'm sitting right next to her and also when she ran into the next room before I could get there. But IMO there's a difference between a fall when my back is turned and a child wandering into a pool. And yes a child can drown in an inch of water in a tub which is why I never take my eyes off of her in the tub. And I am not an over cautious parent. But I think that certain situations call for being very cautious and a pool is one of them. I just feel that in both of the times you were speaking of the parents had their eyes off the child for more than a second or they didn't take proper precautions beforehand.
ETA: I grew up in a house with a pool. And my mom had a key alarm put high up on the door so that god forbid we ever figured out the regular lock, the second we opened the door a very loud piercing alarm would go off.

Re: PLEASE HUG YOUR BABIES TONITE **UPDATE Pg1**
I agree that there are terrible parents out there, who leave their children home alone, leave them to starve for days, abuse them in any which way. THAT, there is no justification, no forgiveness for in my eyes.
But all tragic accidents that have happened under the care of parents, or other close family members, I will NEVER be one to judge "they should have watched more closely"....
In my opinion, its a case of "never say never". Having one toddler vs having more than one (of your own), is QUITE a different dynamic and a different world, and as I said I felt before, sadly enough "it CAN happen to anyone". even to the most careful, caring and cautious parents

I don't think that the parents were horrible ones.... however, I'm sure we all know that having a child requires constant monitoring & caution. So, for a child to accidentally fall into a pool and get severly hurt is questionable. It's one thing for the child to spend mins alone vs seconds. And when my child gets older, I plan on being one step behind him around risky areas.

Re: PLEASE HUG YOUR BABIES TONITE **UPDATE Pg1**
You know what, Im quite shocked that fellow moms are feeling/talking this way...
I think Im done voicing my opinion on this topic... I can go on and on about different tragic accidents and what "category/judgement" does that fall under...
Thank God all babies were fine in both stories....

So are you saying that once I have a second child my view might change on this? Because it wont. I have friends that have 2 year old twin boys and they are constantly watching them. They were at my party and they made sure that those boys were never near the kiddie pool without people around.
I'm not putting these parents in the catergory of abusers. What I'm saying is I don't understand how parents can say I only took my eyes off for a second. That's B.S. A child can't do some of these things in seconds. It's a matter of minutes. And to me when a pool is involved that's unacceptable parenting and I will judge them.
Am I a perfect parent? No, not at all and I'm not trying to claim to be. I know I will make my share of mistakes. There are times when I can't believe how fast my daughter can move to something. But I never take my eyes off of her for minutes. And to me that's the difference.

Thank you because that's exactly the point that I am trying to make. When a child falls into a pool it's questionable parenting. I'm not talking about a 7 year old walking along the side of a pool and accidentally falling in. I'm questioning how 2 year olds get out of their playpens and into the pool without anyone noticing them? That does not happen in a matter of 10 seconds. Unless the playpen is right next to the pool which is questionable parenting to begin with.
