Words never offend me. I am not saying that to be cute or pat – I am saying it because it is the God sworn truth.
Words are given meaning and weight by the person using the word. The person CAN offend me – but words are powerless without any intent.
I don’t know if that makes sense – but it’s how I feel.
Having said that – there are words that I just think are inherently ugly and that I choose not to use. Mostly it is a collection of racial slurs. It doesn’t OFFEND me if someone else says them.. but I do think “ewww… what an unattractive word..”
Feeling that a word is unattractive doesn’t stop me from using it though. Sometimes it is just the exact word that I need for a given situation – like when I am writing a story and I NEED an ugly word.

see, deb... but this goes back to the original point of this post- there are words that are clearly offensive, and then there are words, that, for some reason, based on some experience, of some person... they're offended by it. And while i'm pretty sure that jes isnt going to sh!t a brick if someone says the word yankee on here, there are people that would.
I mean, people are "offended" by the word panties. but they are what they are, too- Panties! Is it an unpleasnat word? Yes. but... offensive????

see this is my point, I don't know what it means in a derogatory sense.
Can you please explain so I know how and when to use it? I hardly use the word (actually, I don't think I have ever used it unless talking baseball) but I like to learn new things.

But it is normally used in a derogatory way. I lived in NC for 15 years and was called that a number of times-but not because I was from New England (which I am not).
I over heard a waistress in NC say that being called a "yankee" was the worst insult EVER
Jake and I were- hell - we are yankees and we are proud- we spent the rest of lunch trying to make up vanity plates for our cars for when we move down south
