The farm fridge magnet is good. A toy phone that has buttons that make noises or light up might be good too. Also what about simple musical instruments? They aren't officially cause and effect toys, but DS can see if I do this, this happens.

What about the leapfrog alphabet magnets? Each magnet will make the sound of a specific letter - if you put the magnet in the battery operated holder/thingee.

DD loves it and sings and dances to the alphabet song. We bought a magnetic board at IKEA for $9 and hung it low in our kitchen. Our fridge is stainless so it wouldnt work. . . but because it's lower, DD plays with it all the time - it's in her little corner of the kitchen.

My DS absolutely loves the bead maze I got him. You know, like you see in Dr's offices, push the beads up, and they come down the other side, he sits there forever playing with this. It says for kids three and up, but DS is almost two and really really loves this toy...a classic!

Although the age for this is 12 months +, all of my daycare children seemed to enjoy this toy for much longer....
