Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
It really depends on your definition of 'excellent'. Do you want big/small? Are you quantifying it by test scores or graduation percentages?
I live in Sayville and I am a fan of the district because it is small. I am particuarly enthusiastic about the communities involvement with the school district and the high level of interaction and communication between the school board, teachers, community leaders and parents.

Although I am very happy with the SD I currently live in, ideally I'd love to live in Cold Spring Harbor SD or in Nassau, Jericho SD.

Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
It all depends. I can tell you about some districts that look excellent on paper, but have rampant drug problems or blatant racial tension, and then I can tell you about other districts that people scoff at that are actually well-rounded and great. So I think it depends what's important to you, personally.

Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
We moved to Smithtown School District b/c it was an excellent ALL AROUND school district...
My eldest daughter has Down Syndrome so I needed to find, not only a good school district, but also a good special education school district...
When doing my research I found that some districts, while they looked wonderful on paper, werent exactly all that they could be...
One school district imparticular is considered "BLUE RIBBON" but chooses to send children like my daughter outside of district so it doesnt effect their overall scores and/or ratings...
Another school district was criticized for not having enough AP classes in high school..but it had wonderful school wide tutoring, special education, sports activities etc and generally seemed to be more about the general population of students rather than just the honors students...
When we chose a school district we asked around, spoke to parents of students from grades K-12, and spoke to teachers within the district...

Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
I really think that school districts are relative like the PPs said. Some districts are great on paper and some are not. I think the best way to make an informed decision is to do your own research based on your own needs and wants. Go into the schools, talk to the staff, talk to parents and make a decision. Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to school distircts.
We are in Smithtown. As a teacher, I did a lot of my own research when we were house hunting and I was very pleased with our district.

We moved to Three Village for this reason as well, but my uncle is a Principal in Sayville and I have heard wonderful things about that district as well.

Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
we are in smithtown mainly bc of the schools. DH and I are from Kings Park and I LOVE their school but we bought at the peak of the market and couldnt afford to stay in KP. Fantastic schools, but very small. there was 219 kids in my graduating class.

I'd probably pick Cold Spring Harbor or Dix Hills in Suffolk. In Nassau, I like Great Neck, Port Washington, Roslyn, Manhasset, Jericho and Syosset.
Newsweek ranks public high schools. http://www.newsweek.com/id/39380/?s=ny&q=2008/rank/1

Re: Please recommend what you feel are the best school districts in suffolk???
Every district is going to have problems, so it's really hard to pinpoint a great district. I teach in one of the best rated high schools in Nassau, yet I see huge problems within that school.
On Long Island, we're lucky because the majority of the schools are great. And really, a school is what you, as a parent, make of it. Be involved in your child's education and work with the school to make it a great one. Don't rely on statistics published in Newsday, or the opinions of a few parents make your decision for you.

I just told my SIL this EXACT thing when she was questioning the district they live in.
Totally true!

cold spring has a big drug problem.
You can say that about just about any district. I know the district I live in has a rep for "having a drug problem" and it's one of the highest regarded districts in Suffolk. The districts in affluent communities are said to have drugs because the kids have more money to burn, and the districts in less affluent areas are said to have drugs because they are in alleged "bad" areas. It's a no-win situation.
The best we can all do is be an involved parent and educate our children about the dangers that lurk in every public place.

TOTALLY agree.
I know one district that is consistantly put down by people over and over again.. but I know a lot of absolutely wonderful, brighter than average kids who have graduated from there and who thrived there. I know another district that everyone and there brother craves.. but my friend's daughter suffered horribly because it was insanely competitive and didn't know what to do with someone who wasn't willing to kill to be considered 'THE BEST'.
I actually chose our district based on the community first.. schools second. And I tried to get a lot of first hand conversations relevant to the experience going with parents who were in the district, administrators and former graduates.

And, for the record, every school is going to have a drug problem. The wealthier kids will just do more expensive drugs! It's all about teaching your kids to stay away from them at home!
