Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
Anthony knows what a potty is. He knows what he needs to do in the potty, yet, he tells us after the fact, so by the time we get to the potty it is too late!!
HELP!
This kid grew out of Pampers Size 6 already!!

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
How old is he?
My only advice is to not push it. I tortured myself and my son with potty training. Did it for two weeks - he peed on the potty every time but was kicking and screaming while doing it. I put him back in a diaper and a month later he was trained.
It's true what they say - it won't be hard when they are ready.
To answer your question though - what helped us: Treats - we gave Skittles and M&Ms every time he went on the potty. Toys. I had a toy bag and every time he peed on the toilet he was able to pick a toy out. This got to be $$ though.
To keep him on the toilet I kept books handy so he would read in there.
Lots of praise when he went. The potty dance of course. Calling everyone.
We tried a sticker chart and that didn't work for us.
Good luck!

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
3 months and still working on it.
DS will never tell me when he has to go. But anytime I tell him to go pee on the potty he will go. So usually every 3 hours I make him sit on the potty and he goes.
Poop, he holds until nap time when he has a pull up and goes in it We are faaaaar from PT over here. I am just going with it for now.

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
My ds is 3 yo and is not really interested. Sometimes he goes on the potty, sometimes he doesnt'. Someone told me that a sign that he is ready is when his diaper is dry when he wakes up. Well it is soaking every morning!!! It seems like everyones kids around me are potty trained and we are no where close!

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
IMo it's the kid. If the kid wants to and is ready to, they simply will. If they are not ready then any brib, or trick in the world will work but it will be inconsistant. Once they are ready it will happen and it'll be easy and fact of life for them.
I let them be naked from the waist down and sometimes I would put underwear on them. I fed and drank them like usual. They ran to the potty when they had to go.
I found training pants to be a diservice so I didn't use them in the house.
They have to be ready for them to communicate that they have to go every single time.

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
Read lots of potty books to her in the weeks leading up to potty training.
Used a Reward Chart that I bought at Buy Buy Baby. DD earned stars for telling us she had to go, getting to the bathroom fast, using the potty, washing her hands and at the end of the day for a dry day. 5 dry day stars and she got a big reward (for her it was a princes dress).
She went bottomless for 3 days. Loose pants and no underwear for 2 weeks.
Salty snacks and lots of water/juice.
HUGE, HUGE over the top celebration when she (or any of us) went to the bathroom, singing, dancing, high fives.
I let her call her grandparents whenever she wanted to tell them of her success.
I had a no turning back policy once I knew she was ready. It was hard but after a few days she got it and never wore a diaper again.
Good Luck!

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
- books on using the potty, I found a book at B&N that had a flushing button sound on it. It was cute.
- dvd on using the potty, I found an animated cartoon about a boy growing out of his diapers & using the potty for the first time. Rented it at my local library.
- purchased lots of underwear
- purchased an animated potty seat for him to sit on. also a step stool.
- Waited for summer time and let him go "free" out in the backyard.
- bought m&ms, skittles, stickers, lollipos. put them in candy jars in his view and told him when he uses the potty he would get some.
- if it was #2 he got a new matchbox car, something bigger
Prepare yourself that it can take up to 6 months or more.

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
DS is 2.5 so I know for sure there is still time, but I've been hearing stories of toddlers as young as 18 months being fully trained. I guess every kid is different.
I'm going to try putting underwear on him & rewarding him more.
Thanks for the tips

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
My son is 2 years 5 months. We potty trained at the end of this past January. Aiden was really showing me signs of wanting to use the potty. I had his seat set up on his second birthday. By January I felt he was ready. I felt I had to do all or nothing so after a lot of research I decided to follow Lora Jensen's, 3 Day Potty Training method exactly. For the most part he was good after 3 days but I would say I followed it exactly for a week. We said goodbye to diapers.

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
Janie, we started out around when Michael was 2.5 by letting him run around the house without a diaper on and teaching him to sit on the potty. After a month or so we started putting on his undies and he started telling us when he had to go. We just reminded him every 30 minutes or so. We didn't push him but we did remind him and reinforce him to go on the potty. Then it all fell into place. He had accidents here and there but for the most part he was potty trained within 2 months of us starting to actively train him. He was fully potty trained by his 3rd birthday. My advice is to stay on top of him and positively reinforce him to go (whether its with stickers or treats). Persistence is the key. If he fights you, then just back down a bit, but I have a feeling if he is already telling you that he has to go (even if its after) that a good sign and I am sure he'll potty train quickly!
ETA: I almost forgot...my SIL got us this book and DVD "Potty Book for Boys" and its so cute! We would read the book every night and remind Michael to make sure he goes on the potty the next day and in the morning we would have him watch the DVD. It has very catchy phrases and music and he loved it! Potty Book

My one and ONLY tip is to NOT PUSH.
When they are ready, they are ready... and when they are TRULY ready, it really does only take a few days.

That is the one thing I learned from Potty Training my son. You all told me that it wasn't supposed to be hard.... It was torture the first time. When he was finally ready it was so EASY! I will not make the same mistake with my second son. I will try and if he doesn't go for it after a day or two - the diaper goes back on. You really can tell when they get it.

So true!!! DD was 3 years, 3 months and woke up one day and said she was ready. Never, ever had a pee accident and I never have to ask her if she has to go - she tells me!
Honestly, if it's a ton of work, or you feel like you are chained to an egg timer, your child just might not be ready.

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
Definitley don't push it! Definitley use rewards. My son was happy if he got rewarded with Puffs..LOL...Yes, the baby puffs! Why? Because he loves them and saw DD eating them.
We then moved on to cookies or a favorite toy (his Thomas Flashlight)..I keep it up high on a shelf and when he did potty, he got it!
School was on board with me too and would reward him as well! It was great being on the "same page".
Im not going to lie, it took MONTHS before he really "Got It"!

Re: Please share your successful Potty Training Tips.
I always told myself I would wait untill DD told me she was ready and not push the issue.
At 27 months, DD told me she wanted to go on the potty and she did, the next morning she pooped on the potty as well. I let her go naked below the waist for 3 days and asked her every 30 minutes if she had to go potty. It worked.
i also reccommend rewards. I kept sweet tarts in the cabinet in the bathroom. She would get one tart for pee and 2 tarts for poop,.,.,lol
She caught on very quick and now tells me whenever she has to go so I don't need to keep asking her.
We are just working on the nighttime potty training now,. Next week I plan on going pullup free at night, we will see how that goes.
