I am not saying that I think what he has done is wrong - it is sick & cruel. He should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. However, I don't understand why the NFL should ban him for life? Only because if he is found guilty he should be in jail and wouldn't have to worry about playing pro ball. Not to mention what about the pro athletes who have committed other horrific crimes including murder, rape, and domestic violence. Shouldn't they all be banned as well?

imo YES they shoudl all be banned as well.

The nature of the petition.
Nowhere does it say IF Vick is found guilty ban him.
It's saying ban him now.
i think that he should be banned until he is found innocent.
think about your job, say you MAY have did something wrong.. they suspend you until they figure out if you are innocent or guilty.
this should happen with him as well.
f*ck him.
is anyone REALLY doubting he is guilty anyway?

I just wonder if people would say ban Mel Gibson from making movies because he drove while intoxicated and could have killed someone.
Or ban Roman Polanski from making movies because of his past.
I know what Vick allegedlly did was horrible, but if you are going to ban one, ban them all.

This is sort of a grey area, though. I think that paid professional sports figures should be banned from their respective sport if convicted of a crime.
But, when you are talking about people like Mel Gibson or Roman Polanski - they aren't being paid by a particular person or association. Roman Polanski actually cannot come to the US, but he can still make movies and, like Mel Gibson...it's for the public to decide wether to support them or not. If we didn't go to their movies they wouldn't make money off us. They don't work for anyone - they work for themselves...Sports figures work for someone.
Oh...and I signed.
Last thing - apparently the federal government has a 95% conviction rate so odds are he is guilty - plus one of the other three guys will strike a deal and roll on him.

Then by that token, and I'm just being devils advocate here, anyone who commits a crime should be immediately fired from their place of work and banned from there for life?

I think it would depend on the crime. If you commit a heinous crime such as this, yes probably...If you kill someone, you don't deserve to go back to your life. If you get caught smoking pot or something minor...you pay the penalty and go back to your life. That's just my opinion though

I respect your opinion. I just think it starts to get to be a giant heaping mass of grey then.
Some people think smoking pot IS a heinous crime.
Where to draw the line?

Re: Please sign this petition to ban Atlanta Falcons player Michael Vick from the NFL for Dog fighting and Animal Cruelty
It really comes down to the fact, for me at least, that when someone is a sport figure -being paid to not only play a sport, but also to give off a certain image for the sport and his/her sponsors.
When a sports figure breeches this contract - no matter how, cheating on his/her SO, fighting dogs, murder - they should have to suffer the consequence. Years ago, you didn't have this kind of thing and I think it's sad that the kids of today look up to a QB who is breeding, fighting and killing dogs or a ballplayer who is caught blatantly cheating on his wife. I think there should be a punishment in the sport for them spoiling that sport.

I agree with this but in a different vein. Michael Vick works for someone (Atlanta Falcons corp. I presume or maybe just a single owner?) so his employer should decide his fate.
On the other hand Mel Gibson and other celebs don't "work" for anyone in particular. Therefore the public can decide their fate by not paying to see movies, not attending concert, signing petitions etc.
Now if the morals clause kicks in for someone at my company in a high enough position, they probably would be let go immediately (no trial) but still with a hefty severance package.
If Vick is released from his contract the Falcons face an estimated salary cap hit of about $6 million for 2007 and $15 million in 2008. A petition asking that he be released pending trial means nothing when $6 million - $15 million is at stake. And from what I gather the $6 million for 2007 and $15 million for 2008 is out of pocket money not advertising dollars.

SIGNED!
What a sick *******. I can't imagine anyone cheering him on during a game.
As far as innocent until proven guilty, like someone else said, it happened on his property. How could you not know this was going on with all the dogs there and the horrific equipment used, not to mention witnesses.

I agree. Also, he hasn't been found guilty yet.
What happened about innocent until proven guilty?
I agree with this. Do I have a gut feeling that he is guilty? Yes. But do I believe in due process? Absolutely.
In addition, by banning Vick without the benefit of a fair trial can completely influence the jury.
If (more like when) Vick is convicted of this absolutely disgusting crime, then he of course should be banned from ever playing a professional sport again.
I understand that the players sign a moral clause in their contract, but I personally believe there has to be a conviction first.
ETA: If their contracts state that an indictment is cause for a ban, then yes, he should most definitely be banned. If it says a conviction is required, then that is yet to be determined by the courts.

Signed. Anyone who partakes in this kind of activity is disgusting and deserves to rot in he-ll. I really don't know what is wrong with people that they can treat sentient animals this way.

Re: Please sign this petition to ban Atlanta Falcons player Michael Vick from the NFL for Dog fighting and Animal Cruelty
I read the indictment and I wholeheartedly believe that Vick is guilty. There is quite a lot of evidence & details in the indictment; his acts were heinous & disgusting. I am sure he will be convicted. Anyone know what the sentencing would be if they are found guilty?
One thing clarify though, Vick owned the property, but didn't live there. In fact, I heard yesterday on the radio the person who does live at the home was indited, which makes me believe he is one of the informants, interesting.
I still don't think there should be a lifetime ban on the part of the NFL. Not that I believe he should ever play pro ball again, but like I said earlier there are other heinous crimes that have been committed and those players were not banned, even if they will never play again. While I believe people should be punished to the full extent of the law, I also believe in second chances, rehabilitation, and the fact that people make mistakes. (That said, I don't believe Vick is sorry, just sorry he got caught - his actions were not a "mistake", because they were calculated and went on for a period of time, IMO.) Thus I just don't believe anyone who does a crime should be banned for life.

Re: Please sign this petition to ban Atlanta Falcons player Michael Vick from the NFL for Dog fighting and Animal Cruelty
Done...
Dog fighting is disgusting. I have no respect for people who train, bet or are in anyway involved in dog fighting. It is horrific. I feel that if people can treat innocent animals this way, they can do worse to people amongst our communities. They are barbaric and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. We NEED harsher laws for cruelty to animals.
ETA: If he is found guilty, which he most likely is, he should no longer be able to play pro football. I also believe that when rappers and celebrities are convicted of crimes, their songs should no longer be played on the radios and they should not be glamorized. It gives people a false reality, that you can commit a crime and still get what you want and make $$$. This is not reality for normal, everyday people. If we start making stricter penalties and "black listing" the people in the pulic eye for things they do wrong, kids that idolize them will began to realize that punishments do exist.
