Please tell me I am not crazy...
OK, so we spent Christmas Eve with DH's mother and grandmother at our house. DH aunt was supposed to come over too, but she was too sick to come with some sort of cold or flu or something.
DS is 15 weeks old. We went to DH's uncle's house today and the aunt who was sick yesterday ended up coming over.... apparently feeling better.
She shows up wearing a surgical mask on her face (I guess as a joke... not funny) and then proceeds to say she is going to wash her hands so she can hold DS.
OK, first of all, why would you ask to hold someone's baby if you were so sick the day before?
DH and I both hesitated, then told her very politely that we would prefer she not hold DS because we don't want him getting sick.
She proceeded to go sulk, get an attitude and be totally offended because of our request. She didn't really talk to us the rest of the time we were there.
Are we out of line for not wanting her to hold DS? I would never ask to hold someone's baby the day after I was sick and I would DEFINITELY NOT get offended if they told me their wishes... as the parent!
Please tell me I am not crazy here... or if I am let me know that too! I could be wrong... although I don't think I am!!!

Wow, that is nerve. First I'm surprised she even showed up...then she had nerve to ask to hold your son after being so sick. You are totally not wrong with your request...and she should have totally respected your wishes & not had any sort of problem w/ it.
If she didn't like it, TOO BAD. I'd be

Thank you! I guess I was looking for validation that I wasn't out of line!!! I am so annoyed at her for being so immature about the whole thing!

I don't think your unreasonable for telling her you prefer her not to hold your DC after being sick. She should know better.
As for the surgerical mask - perhaps that was a kind gesture. When my mom first came to see DD when she was very little, my mom wore a mask because she had just gotten over some cough and didn't want to take any chances with salvia/germs accidentally spreading to the baby.

At first I thought she was actually trying to not spread her germs... by coming in with the mask... However after about 30 seconds, she took it off! (obviously she wasn't trying to keep any germs to herself!)
Then she had the nerve to tell my DH "I didn't realize you were such a germiphobe".. when he tried to smooth things over with her!!!

i agree...my ds has rsv/bronchiolitis and is only 12 weeks old..not fun to have, and you can tell he's suffering..it's so easy for babies to catch germs...good for you for not letting her!

Re: Please tell me I am not crazy...
I am not crazy nervous about germs, but that said this woman was wrong on so many levels. How dare she knowingly expose a small child to germs, especially during flu/rsv season.
I didn't go near my nephew today, who is 18 months, because I felt like I had a post nasal drip and might be getting something. I just don't get why you would knowingly expose a small baby to germs.

Re: Please tell me I am not crazy...
You are most definitely not crazy. Your baby is only 15 weeks old. And I'm sorry, if you were sick yesterday, you aren't magically cured today.
And even if you were, YOU are the mom. Its about your wishes, not about your aunt.

Re: Please tell me I am not crazy...
Tough sh!t on her!!!!!!!!
When my nephew was about 6 weeks old I got caught in a fire while covering a news story. I ended up with some lung damage and I needed to wear a surgical mask everywhere, even in our own home. I did go over to their house and looked at him while standing in the doorway about 20 feet away. That's as close to him as I got. It absolutely broke my heart, but I wasn't stupid. Your aunt is stupid.

Re: Please tell me I am not crazy...
You know... it absolutely baffles me that so many people have the nerve to say that we as new moms are too paranoid....
IT'S NOT THEIR CHILD - if they already had theirs, they were able to raise theirs as they saw fit.....
Let us raise our children and have who we want to hold them the way that WE SEE FIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Please tell me I am not crazy...
As someone who spent the 2nd week of dd's life in a hospital with her & had to hold her down while the ER docs tried multiple times to get a sucessful spinal tap because she had a fever, I can tell you you're not wrong.
I think she's cruel to mock your concerns. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.
