PLEASE tell me it gets better

Jack has been a screaming maniac these last couple of days for really no reason at all. When he's not screaming I still hear it in my head.

Is there anything I can do. I am a big fan of the 5s but they don't always work with him right now (they were a week ago)

Should I be feeding more? He's already eating over 5ozs at every feeding (and he's not even 4weeks yet) - but I think he could possibly still be hungry

Just please tell me it gets better soon!

THANKS! Chat Icon

It does get better! But a few questions-does he seem really gassy? Is he adjusting well to the formula? We switched DD to Gentlease at 2 months and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. And she was only supplementing about 4-6 oz a day at that time.

Re: PLEASE tell me it gets better

Hm dd gets 4 oz at each feeding. Maybe he has gas? Do you take him outside? DD calms down immediately when we go in the stroller.

Do you give him a pacifier?

Re: PLEASE tell me it gets better

He seems to be adjusted to the formula. He farts regularly and goes to the bathroom 1-2 times a day.

He always calms down when we bring him for walks in the stroller - or drives (except for last night. DH was at the gym - he had a fit - I got him in the car and he was screaming so loud I thought he was going to choke himself)

The problem is really in the middle of the night. I don't know what to do when he has these fits at 3am. And, even though we have central ac - it is sooooo hot upstairs that I don't want to swaddle him all the time bc I am so worried about SIDS and him overheating.

ETA: he does get a pacifier - and it's fine until he is screaming bloody murder that he just spits it out in my face.Chat Icon

We've had our share of these moments as well. I can tell you that as time goes on it does get better. Lucas was pretty demanding in the beginning and had a short fuse on top. Chat Icon He would wake up screaming until the bottle was in his mouth. At four weeks I noticed something was wrong...he would get into the ugly cry while eating and arch his back. Now my big boy likes to eat so for him to stop and refuse the bottle I knew something was wrong...turned out he has acid reflux. Not that Jack does but you might want to bring up his behavior to the doctor. He might be experiencing some discomfort for some reason or other and maybe they can help.

At 8 weeks, Lucas is a different child. He sleeps more...wakes up happy and can just chill for longer periods at a time (although we are still working on not having to hold him every waking moment). He loves motion so we are constantly trying to give him that.

ETA: Late at night - we never really did the 5 Ss either but we did some similar things. DS likes to be held and to sleep he likes to be held close. So when I am feeding him before bed and when DH gets him at night we hold him close - stare into this eyes often and make sure that our skin touches his (his arms and legs) We don't swaddle because he is a tummy sleeper but we do keep a receiving blanket on him with the ac.

It does get better.

Maybe call your ped, I called mine just before 8 weeks and we made the switch to Gentlease and he is a totally different kid.

Note, it may get a bit worse before it gets better -- many babies follow a pattern of 6 weeks of increasing fussiness followed by 6 weeks of it decreasing. The good news is that assuming there are no other issues, you are close to hitting the worst of it, and it will improve soon after!!!

Re: PLEASE tell me it gets better

Thanks everyone! Right now he is just hanging out in his bouncy seat and not making a peep. I know that babies cry but it is just so AWFUL to listen to when you can't soothe him. He has to constantly be rocked to cuddled to calm down - and then the second I put him down the screams start all over again.

I go to the Ped next week so I'll def. talk to him about his formula.

How often do you feed him? Perhaps he needs more feedings?

He eats a little over 5ozs every three hours. Granted, he's a big boy - but I feel like he eats so much. I am going to try to increase the formula a little bit more.

You can call and tell them his symptoms, that is what I did. They told me to swing by and get some samples, so I did.

Christopher was the same way, and I am guessing it really was gas b.c now there is no screaming except when he is overtired and doesn't want to go to sleep....but that is a whole different storyChat Icon

ETA: WOW! 5oz and he isn't 4 weeks yet?? I have a 12 weeker who only takes 4oz!

Re: PLEASE tell me it gets better

Noah had those few episodes and they seem to have drastically changed since being on the gentlease. He still has gas but I can get it up or he can deal with it till it passes and its a 1/2 hour thing not an hourly long thing like it was.

Do you have the thin cotton miracle blanket? What do you dress him in to sleep? I would use the miracle blanket and NOTHING but his diaper if you think hes getting too hot. And increase the Central Air. I think swaddling at night is so important. Noah cannot sleep through the night without it.

When hes swaddled, check his ears, if his ears are hot, hes overheated. His back etc will still be hot. Just like a human. If a fan is blowing on you , you could be freezing, but your back ( b/c your laying on it and your neck) is warm, but your no where near overheated...Does that make sense?

It could be a phase too...If it lasts over a week, I would worry more.

Hes a big boy, I say give him a small amount more at each feeding if need be. Hes about Noahs size and thats what matters not age and Noah eats 5-6 oz's at each feeding.

Hang in there! IT GETS BETTER!
