The only thing I can think of as a con right off the bat is that dh & I would have to keep noise level down if the kids are sleeping.

Re: please tell me what you love/hate about having a Ranch home and kids

we just moved to a ranch (from a queens apartment) and the reason for picking a ranch was because we have 2 kids under the age of 2. I wanted all bedrooms on the same floor. It was very hard for us to find a house with three bedrooms on the same floor aside from a ranch. we have only been in it for 6 months but im pretty happy with it. we do not find we have to keep the noise level down because living in a small apartment the kids have learned to sleep through the television, us talking etc.
as much as i have no issues with a ranch, i would have preferred a house with all bedrooms on a second level but its personal preference

Re: please tell me what you love/hate about having a Ranch home and kids

Love - All the bedrooms are on the same floor. No running up and down flights of stairs at 3am when a baby cried.

Love - I can just walk in my front door. Friends of ours have a high ranch, and they have to haul groceries/car seats/book bags up/angry toddlers up two flights of stairs to get into their house.

Hate - Bedrooms are a little too close to my living area and one of my daughters is a very light sleeper.

My bedrooms are far enough from my den so there isn't really a noise issue and we and dd both have fans so don't really hear much. It depends on the layout of the ranch though. The one I grew up on ran parallel to the main parts of the house meaning it was the kichen, dining room and living room and there was a hallway but the main living areas were only seperated by a hallway. It was noisy when people were over or if the tv was on in the livingroom. My current house you walk in the living room the bedrooms and bathroom are clustered off to the left and then the den is off to the right so there is good seperation so it doesn't get too noisy. I love the layout of my house and would definitely by another ranch with the same layout.

Re: please tell me what you love/hate about having a Ranch home and kids

I really dont have any negatives. I wish my house was bigger but I would buy a ranch again without hesitation.

I love that I never really had to worry about my kids falling down stairs as they started walking (we have 1 step down into our playroom), love the ease of having everything on one floor, if you forget a diaper or socks for your little one everything is pretty close, love the overall flow of my home.

My kids are good sleepers, so once they are asleep they can sleep through anything! we never have an issues with tv noise or even noise if we have a friend over when they are sleeping....

ETA - we have lived in this house since before my kids were born.

The only negative i can see is that when we entertain, everything has to be clean because everything is accessible. lol

How many sq ft are your ranches, if you don't mind. We placed an offer on a 1200 sq ft, 3 bed/2bath house plus a full basement & half an attic & 1 cargarage. I am hoping that it's enough space for 4 of us. We are coming from a 950 sq ft apt with a full attic.

I like ranches for young families bc I feel you can let the kids wreck the basement while keeping your living room/dining room kid free, this was actually a motivating factor in me buying a ranch. We ended up in a colonial and can't wait to have my basement finished so my kids can stop wrecking my LR lol

We are also in a colonial and the first year we lived here our living room was our playroom, which you saw as soon as you walked in. I loved fixing up our basement and like you said, now DS can wreck that and nobody has to see it! and it actually doesnt look too bad unless its really really bad because its a playroom so its supposed to look like a toy store vomited all over it. And now our living room looks nice :)

No negatives - my kids slept with a sound machine so any potential noise issues were a non-issue.

I don't live in one, but as I look at real estate online I usually skip over ranches because it kind of creeps me out to sleep on the ground level. I would never feel comfortable sleeping with my bedroom windows open, and when it isn't too cold or too hot, we open our windows. I know peeping toms and home invasions are very rare, but I just don't think I could get used to the feeling of vulnerability while I sleep, however irrational that may be.

Love having a ranch, we have 1600 sq ft + 800 sq ft finished basement. I like that we're all on the same level. I could see, as my daughter and future kids get older I wouldn't want to be on top of them as far as bedrooms are concerned but this is 15 yrs down the line.

Re: please tell me what you love/hate about having a Ranch home and kids

I only wanted a ranch. I want my daughter to be able to play in her room during the day and not have to be separated by a floor from the rest of the goings-on of the family. I grew up in a ranch and never had noise bother me - you get used to it. Plus I don't want headaches of 2 floors - if a bathroom leaks or an a/c leaks or the floor starts to sag, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention I don't want to move again when I'm old, and a ranch is the perfect lifespan home.

We also have a ranch in Nassau. We have 3 bedroom 2 1/2 baths.
I have twin boys and they are 3yrs. Our house is TOO SMALL. We don't have enough closets. My boys share, one room is play room & we have other room. My husband has master closet & my clothes in closet playroom. If we had another child that needed a room.......no idea where my clothes would go. We also have garage/basement.
You are coming from 950 sq ft...you wont really see much difference to go to 1200

A positive of a ranch is that you can always go up or out if you want to dormer if you're finding the space a little small.

I have a 3 bedroom ranch and don't like it, maybe if it had a much different layout it would be better...I like when all the bedrooms are on the same floor, but I prefer them to be on a second floor. I want the living/entertaining space separate from the bedrooms/personal bathrooms.

Hated it, felt like we couldn't clean the kitchen or entertain in evenings due to him sleeping. We bought a colonial.

We have a colonial but I started out just wanting a ranch. I think it all depends on the floor plan of whatever house you have. You don't want the bedrooms too close to the living area because they you never get any privacy/separation. I agree with the stairs and I hate running up and down the stairs all day long and I did not want that. The one criteria that I had that I would not budge on was that I wanted my daughter's playroom on the same level that I was spending the most time and it had to be enclosed. I do not like basements and I am not comfortable sending her down to play. I like to be close but not to close. We ended up getting a colonial with a bedroom downstairs (which is her playroom) and 4 bedrooms upstairs. Except for the morning and night time routines, we are never upstairs. So this worked out perfectly for us. At night she is in her bedroom and can't hear a thing while we are in the livingroom and dining room.

My suggestion is not to focus so much on the style of house first but to figure out how you want to live in house and then find a style that suits that need.

I saught a one story house. Hate stairs, hated the idea of her on status, easier resell value.

Our one story is set up so she's on the opposite side of the house from us which is nice.

I have no negatives

hated it only bc I didn't like that the bedrooms were so close to living room, not enough storage areas and i don't like my room being ground level. We are in a cape now.. and since we only have 1 DD we use the upstairs rooms..
