Poison Ivy
We just realized that a huge bush in our yard is poison ivy , and there are little plants sprouting up all over.
DH sprayed some ortho weed killer on it, but I have a feeling that is not going to cut it. What do you have to do to get rid of this stuff??

Re: Poison Ivy
DH works outside and gets it EVERY YEAR - he has it now actually I wish they had a shot you could get each year to prevent it!
I think he said for homeowners, Preen is a good product to use for all weeds.
Definitely wear gloves, long pants, and long sleeves if you rip them up and just to be extra safe, I would shower right after.

Re: Poison Ivy
I have poison ivy growing behind my fence. Every year I spray Ortho Weed Killer specifically for poison ivy and it works really well. Spray it directly onto the plant (soak it). It should get rid of it.

Re: Poison Ivy
What about Round-Up?? That stuff is a systemic weed/anything killer. Just be careful not to get any on your other plants.

Re: Poison Ivy
We were back there a few weeks ago trimming bushes and DH wound up with a rash on his arm...I didn't even think b/c he has such sensitive skin...
This is all going on in a huge ivy patch...which we want to get rid of anyway. I guess we will just spray and kill the whole thing. I just wanted to save teh azalea bush. I guess we should dig it out first.
The poison ivy bush is the second on the left....

Re: Poison Ivy
I think the ivy patch is pretty (excluding your poison ivy problem).

Re: Poison Ivy
Ortho Weed Killer specifically for poison ivy should work. De-weeding, pulling them up roots and all will work even better. Wear gloves! Either method will take time and several applications before getting it all.
Preen is for weed prevention and will not kill poison ivy.
Good Luck!

Thanks, but the problem is that we can't keep it under control. I don't know what the previous owners did (this is our first spring here), but that stuff is SPREADING! We're afraid it will take over!!!

Re: Poison Ivy
Use Roundup!! But just so you know even once it dies you can still get the rash from the dead leaves, stem and roots. Be careful if you pull it out because if you dont get all of the roots out, it will come back.

Ivy spreads very fast. It's used as a ground cover but it's really annoying because it spreads "everywhere". Pro: easier to use the lawn mower because of the fence.

Re: Poison Ivy
I have english ivy in my backyard--actually all over my backyard & my husband & i used a guy who grinds stumps to cut it up to make it easier to get rid of. Yesterday I happened to be out there because I wanted to see how the round up took since I used a whole big bottle on one section. Well as I was pulling out roots dirt hit me in the face and I got posion ivy right under my eye--my whole eye blew up. Even though I was wearing gloves, pants & long sleeves I still got it--I think I am going to have to wear a full body suit like they do when they try to catch bees---all in all just be careful--since it is so big you just don't want to get it---before pulling it out make sure that you give it ALOT of round up--because the roots can still give you the rash. Good luck

Re: Poison Ivy
If you do pull it out and wear gloves and long sleeves and pants - wash up immediately with something called "brown soap"
