Poison Ivy removal or land clearing...
I have two sections of my back yard that are pretty much woods. There are trees, overgrown stuff (not even sure what to call it and I am positive poison ivy. What do I do? Do I get an ivy removal guy in to remove it all or call someone to clear the land but keep all trees? I am so at a loss....
Any suggestions on people to use?

I don't know much about poison ivy, but one thing I know is that a friend of mine pulled out all this poison ivy and the next session thought it was safe to dig with no gloves in the dirt where the poison ivy was. WRONG! I guess the root system was still in the dirt and he got poison ivy for the 2nd time.   So find out how they remove the poison ivy and if you should use gloves all the time or if you have to stay away from the area completely. Better to be safe then sorry. GL!

Yep even with gloves my DH managed to get it on his wrist ! Of course where the glove and sweatshirt was exposing some skin at a moment. Booo. So that is why I was thinking of getting the land cleared but keeping our trees. I love the trees but hate the other stuff.

I would get the land cleaned but keep the trees. I bought about elbow length gardening gloves for this reason. Wear long sleeve shirt with the long gloves over the shirt. wear boots with socks pulled up with long jeans. I hope he doesn't get it again. GL!

This is what we are thinking, getting the land cleaned. I can imagine what it will cost... but I am sure it will be worth it. What a mess. I am going to call around to people today in hopes in getting someone that is reasonable.

We had to have the land cleared out. DH is really allergic to poison ivy. It sent him to the ER twice. Our landscaper did it for us.

I would check with regular landscapers first but they might be pricey. I see signs nailed to utility poles all the time in season about ivy removal. Nothing lately though.
It's true that the runners and roots spread underground and hold on to the oils long after the top growth is gone. I got a nasty case of it 2 summers ago and now I go hunting for it. I spray the sh*t out of it with a water/dishwashing soap/vinegar mix and then cover the top growth with bricks to starve it of sunlight. I always wear gardening gloves with my long sleeves tucked into the wrist portion. And if I think I accidentally brushed up against it at all, I wash everything separately.
On another related topic... are your new hosta coming up yet?

no  I don't understand? I was wondering? I am going to be so sad if they don't. I did everything you said to do to them.... booo.

Don't worry, they'll break ground soon. Those things are really tough to kill. And they will come back even stronger next year and the one after that.

I am hoping so... I have a bad feeling on where I planted them, I think it's dirt but not soil...

You can amend it. Get some good compost and use a hand rake to rake some into the first inch or so of dirt, water well, put some mulch on top. You can do this when the overnight temp is consistently above 32 degrees - probably May 1 to May 15.
When they really start going and flowering, I want to see pics! I can't wait until you smell them. I don't know if it's my imagination but the smell seems more intense towards sunset.

We used a company - for the life of me, I can't remember the name right now and they weren't cheap, but worth every penny.
I think the plants may still be dormant now (you won't see the leaves, but the roots are still alive), so you may want to wait a little bit so that they can make sure to get it all.
