Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

we've always adopted our dogs from teh shelter...
for 14 years growing up, we had a dog that we found as a puppy on the massachusetts turnpike!!! we were coming home from maine on vacation, and stopped at a rest area and this tiny black lab puppy was tied to a picnic table!! somebody had just left him there! so, we brought him home and kept him for 14 years- he passed away a couple years ago Chat Icon
BUT, then DH and i adopted our goofball from a shelter in december 2004.... he needed some training in the beginning , but hes such our baby now Chat Icon External Image External Image

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

I never bought an animal from an breeder, store, etc.

I've always adopted, mostly from NSAL (3 dogs). I once had a cat adopted from a friend's cat's litter and my last dog was adopted from a family who "didn't have time for her?Chat Icon "

DH's cat, Zoe was adopted from the Little Shelter.

Now I ask you, who wouldn't have time for these two?

ETA: They don't live together. The dog lives with my Dad, Zoe has serious anxiety issues.

we adopted our kitty from a member of LIF. Her cousin found the kitten and had too many animals at the time. So she posted on the board and my DH and I got our baby!! Chat Icon

Looks like he found a happy home thru the boardsChat Icon

Gizmo was adopted from a person that couldn't care for him. Her dog had puppies and she was keeping them, until they got too much to handle. We got him when he was 6 months old. I think my parents gave her $50, but we got all his stuff with him.

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

my very first dog was dumped in the park across the street...my dad fed him and said if he was still there in the AM, we'd keep him.

All my dogs growing up came from shelters. Cats too...either shelter or we brought them in from outside where they were strays.

Our Rottie DH Bought from a friend he went to HS with...I can't say breeder....he had both parents in FL but moved back to NY and was only able to bring 1...he brought the PG mama.

The puggle we adopted...found him on petfinder.com and HAD to have him.

We REALLY want a boston terrier and are considering adopting an older one from a rescue group.

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

My first dog, Maddie, was a mixed breed that I adopted from North Shore. I got her when she was a tiny puppy and had her until she passed away from cancer at the age of ten. She was the best dog I could have ever asked for and adopting her was truly one of the best things I ever did.

And the dog I have now, Zoey, I bought from a breeder because I was looking for a specific breed. She is equally wonderful and loving—I lucked out twice. So for me, both buying and adopting have been wonderful options.

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

Let's see......here goes my zoo.....we actually bought my Pomeranian from the Pet Store (I think if it were up to me next time, I would definitely adopt. I still live at home so I don't get to make all of the decisions!!) I got one of my rabbits from a breeder, my other guy is from the pet store. My cat was a stray who we took in (the best thing we ever did...I love my boy!!), birds from breeders, and that's about all I guess. The fish obviously come from the petstore...

My cat came from NSAL. I can't see buying a pet when there are so many wonderful pets in shelters that need homes.

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

I replied "Other" - We had been discussing a dog and thinking about a weimeraner(weren't 100% sure),when we went to contract on the house we contacted the Weimeraner Rescue thinking that it would take (as stated on the site) 3 - 6 months to find a puppy/dog. Three days later I got an e-mail from the LI Rescue division regarding a couple who couldn't keep their Weimie and were we interested. We talked to her original owners and went to meet her, fell in love and took her home (to our apartment).
So - we sort of used all different things but in the end adopted a dog from the original owner through a rescueChat Icon

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

BTW - we got Espresso from a pet store in Copaigue that had a bunch of kittens. DH and I had just moved in together and were talking about getting a kitten. I went to the store with my friend to pick up bird seed for her birds. I was walking around and they had a ton of kittens in the back for adoption. I started looking at them and Espresso literally snuck out of the cage and started following me around - how could I not take him homeChat Icon - I paid $40 to take him and when I got him fixed, went back to the store with my receipt and the paperwork from the vet and got my $40 back. I thought this was a pretty cool way to adopt the kittens out...and then they didn't end up going to a kill shelter.

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

Molly adopted us! She was (we think) owned by the people down the street, who moved away and left her. She was in sad shape when she showed up on our doorstep, but now she is a spoiled little brat Chat Icon

Hershey was from NSAL as a puppy by a co-worker of mine who couldn't keep her (she was deaf, they didn't know when they adopted her and she was too much for the family with little kids).

Bailey - DH's ex bought him from Yuppy Puppy.

Max - we adopted from Little Shelter as an adult (9 yrs old).

Re: [Poll] - Buying versus adopting

i would love to adopt a dog from a shelter, but they are too big and most of the time they don't know the history of the dog. i will try to adopt a dog from a rescue group, but i heard you have to be a previous dog owner. Breeders i heard can be expensive.
