This is a tough one...
Well Dh wants a house first...and there is NO changing his mind.
However, I am more flexible. I grew up in apartments so I have a different view. We have a two bedroom condo (small second bedroom), but ok for a baby. I would want a house by the time the baby is 2. I think it would be more affordable to have the baby first since we already have our condo. But, Dh is not budging on this. I have no idea when we will get a house, but I would like to start trying for a baby in about a year...so we'll see.

same here. Im pretty indifferent... i lived in apartments all my life, so i dont see the big deal. the only thing i would worry about is space b/c our apartment now is pretty small, BUT no matter how much space i have, im always going to have more junk than space, so thats not the biggest deal anyway. Also, if we have a house (given these prices) i would be scared to even take the minimum amount of time off of work for maternity leave, nevermind anything more than that Chat Icon Also having a Mortgage scares me a million times more than having a baby (minus the labor part and teenage years Chat Icon ) So, i guess it doesnt really make a difference to me. but DH is pretty serious about having ahouse first...

BABY.

A house is not important to me. I grew up in several different apartments MUCH smaller than the one I am in now.

BABY! Especially now that its not happening as I imagined.

I would LOVE a house, but we are very happy right where we are, dont see the thrill of a house like other people do...sometimes I wonder why we dont...but At the rate the baby making is going, we will probably end up with the house first.

baby. I really don't get the whole "needing" to have a house first. Plenty of people live in apartments and are fine. What if you get a house and wait too long and then you can't get pregnant? I don't know, that just never made sense to me.

Well that is why i am trying to get a house ASAP! But there are plenty of people that can get PG at older ages.

ETA...Plus it is hard for me to find a house NOW. In a few years i suspect it will be even MORE difficult and i will have to make even more sacrafices..since i want to stay on LI.

Well to clarify my situation a bit more, we rent a 1 bedroom apt. with not much room for a baby. Definitely not enough room for a child. The landlords are jerks who constantly raise the rent and threaten to kick us out whenever we argue. We would have left a long time ago but its hard to find a rental or a co-op that allows dogs.

Re: Poll - House or Baby

I feel like if you don't get a house before the kdis you may not gt one after the kids. Plus I want my kids to have the things I never had, like a backyard and fresh air, etc. The fact that I'm getting married at 25 could have a lot to do with it. Hopefully I'll have a lot of childbearing years after that, but I can totally udnerstand if you're getting closer and closer to that ominous 35 mark and you want to have the babies while you still can.

you might want to be careful about the use of the word 'ominous' when referring to age. I get where you are coming from, but some of the ladies on the TTC are in their mid to late 30's, so you may want to be mindful of that and be careful with words like 'ominous'

Thanks for thinking of us Don...I have passed that "ominous" 35 mark, and at 38 I got pregnant. It's not necessarily about age. And BTW, am glad I waited -- to have a baby withthe RIGHT person. If I had had one with my ex....Chat Icon

It depends really.

At this point I say house, but if it is going to take me 10 years to get a house, then I'd want a baby first.

In reality, 2 bedroom co-op, baby, then house would be more probable.

If I were even 5 years younger, I would say House. However, that clock is ticking faster and faster so I have to go with baby.

NO NO NO.. I meant it as in 35 seems to be the magic number people throw around with TTC, that after 35 you can't have kids without 3 heads, etc etc. I wasn't agreeing with it at all. Obviously in this day and age people have healthy babies past 35. I didn't say it to give it any creedence. It's just still embedded as this magic number people walk around with in their heads, and that people use to pressure other people "pretty soon you're going to be 35." I don't buy into it. I didn't mean it to be offensive, I meant it to just comiserate with all of the pressure people feel to do things by a certain age. I apologize. I didn't mean to be insensitive to the difficulties people are having with TTC, I know about them all too well from my friends and family. I'm really SO SO sorry.

Re: Poll - House or Baby

I'd like a house first, but I'd at least like to own something (a condo or a townhome). It's not super important, that we own a house before having a baby, but it would be ideal.

Re: Poll - House or Baby

I'd like a house first. We are not planning on having a baby for a few years (not that you can always plan), and our one bedroom apt. is barely big enough for the two of us, much less a baby.
