POLL - Need some input..........help me with a little "research" please
Little background: I LOVE to cook and have been doing it for well over 20 years. I'm completely self-taught, I've never been to a formal culinary school but I've spent countless hours cooking, watching cooking shows, reading cookbooks, and learning as much I can. At this point, I'm pretty well versed in certain types of cooking and techniques.
Anyway, I have a cooking FB page (because people were always asking me for recipes) and I'm the "go-to" person for friends and family when they need a good recipe, help with a recipe, or cooking questions. I've been told many times, "you should teach cooking classes". I always brushed it off but now I'm thinking.................why not?
So, I was thinking of starting in-home cooking classes (my home or other people's homes) for small groups (4-6 adults at a time) and kids cooking classes. It would be hands on and I'd cook and teach along with the group. At the end of the class I'd give out a packet with the recipes from class and any pertinent cooking tips and techniques. THERE WOULD BE NOTHING TO BUY!! This isn't a direct sales thing where you feel obligated to buy a new kitchen tool or gadget. I am NOT selling anything other than my time and knowledge, it would simply be a class to share what I know and have fun!
That being said....................if this were available, do you think it's something people would be interested in? If so, what would you expect to pay for a 2 - 2.5 hr class which includes the class, all ingredients, and recipe packet?
Any suggestions or comments are welcome, just trying to gather info to see if it's worth getting involved in. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally, I would find this much more fun - and useful - than a paint party! Especially if some of the options for what you can learn are vegetarian!! And I know my 12 year old daughter would like to do something like this.
Seriously, I have so many of those paintings from going to paint parties. I suck at painting, lol, so none of them are getting hung up or anything. But I love going to those parties and having fun with friends and wine lol.
I think if you market this well, it could be a really fun idea! Good luck, and your facebook page sounds cool.

I love this idea! Would you charge per person or just the host would split the cost with however many people she is having? Im just thinking the more people the more ingredients you would have to bring. Maybe the host can pick up some of the ingredients or if she has some of the things you wouldn't have to bring them. Im also thinking of maybe sitting down with a family of 5 and going over some meals that are easy for the mom to make for the week. That is something I would be interested in. Coming over and showing her how easy it would be to prep for the weeks meals. Would you be open to doing one on on teaching or teaching the family? Just throwing things out.

I was thinking that too...........a flat fee for up to a certain amount of people instead of per person. Trying to work out what makes the most sense financially without making it too costly for someone to take a class.
I did think about doing one-on-one too and I am totally open to that. If this is something that works out and there is interest I'd love to be able to do small children's cooking parties, one-on-one classes, small group classes, specialty classes etc. I feel like there are so many people who thinking cooking has to be hard, complicated, and time consuming and my whole "angle" would be to teach people it doesn't have to be any of those things. I'd like to take the approach of more simple, home cooking type of meals. Nothing gourmet with fancy, expensive ingredients.............teaching people to use what they have and creating something yummy with minimal time and ingredients.
On the flip side, I also thought about having classes with a theme or technique in mind such as: Fall Favorites, Comfort Food, Xmas Cookies, Pasta Making, Summer Treats, etc. Just playing around with ideas!!
I have my FB page which is pretty simple but I also started working on a website which will have class info and sign up forms, recipes, pictures, a blog, tips, etc. That's in the works!!
Thank you everyone for the input, I REALLY appreciate it!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!! I am happy to hear this! I thought it would be such a good idea because it's a no pressure, fun, learning experience. No obligation to buy things, not a huge time commitment and someone would be taking the class because they genuinely want to as opposed to feeling obligated to like a direct sales party.
If you want to take a look at my FB page just do a search for Kristen's Kitchen. It's a closed group but I can add you if you want. If you can't find it, just PM me your info and I'll add you to the group.

I think a flat fee for up to a certain amount of people would be the best way to charge. Then the host can figure out how to split up the fee per person. It's def a great idea though. I was invited to a party like this a couple years ago. It was at a friends house and it sounded great but I had a prior commitment.

That's what I thought I would do too, it would be hands on so everyone would help to prepare the food and then at the end, everyone can eat and enjoy!!

A girl and her mother do it in our community.
She was on Master Chef Junior and her even younger sister just won Chopped Junior.
They charge per person and then give you the shopping list to provide the food.
They do a lot of kids workshops, girl scout groups, and also adult home parties.

I think this is an awesome idea! I could totally see doing this with a few girlfriends as a girls night. Ingredients included $65-$75. If I'm making baked ziti, I'm not paying $75. But if there's meat and it's something new and exciting? $75+ for sure
I just requested to join your FB Page.
I love learning new recipes
Best of luck! I think you have found a few customers right here in this thread!

Re: POLL - Need some input..........help me with a little "research" please
I would love something like this. DH and I did a cooking class at Sur la Table and it was a lot of fun although I didnt like that we were broken into groups with strangers and we each got to do one step of the recipe which we then shared. I wanted to do it all beginning to end including the prep so I could replicate it at home. Would it involve cooking or would you bring it home to cook? It's hard to do at someone's home if there limited appliances although we have an open floorplan with a large island and large dining room table, double ovens, etc so maybe we could swing it.
It would also depend on the recipes -- I would want to feel like it was something special.
One of my sorority sisters went back to culinary school and actually used to do this in NYC (the in-home cooking classes, etc) and ended up relocating to Chicago in part because it was cheaper and she was also able to get her own dedicated kitchen space to hold larger events and regular classes. I think she also does in-home. Here is her website in case it gives you any ideas:
http://thesocialtable.com/
In my case, the social aspect would be fun (ie: pizza making night) but I am a pretty good cook myself and I personally would love to learn something new and different -- great ethnic food, something more advanced that I dont know how to do (or even something simple I dont know how to do like cut up a whole chicken). That would appeal more to me than a more simple meal prep night
Edit: based on this article, it looks like her old classes back in NYC used to be appx $75 with ingredients included

I've taken Sur La Table classes too and I felt the same way. There was too much standing around and not as much hands on cooking as I would've liked. That's why I feel like this could be better, it would be a smaller group and more interaction.
I would love to do all the cooking during the class. Everyone has basic appliances (stove, microwave, pans etc) BUT my plan would be to bring all of the things I'd need that night. I'd keep a basic set of tools, knives, pans, etc and whatever I need for the recipe I am teaching that day. I guess similar to how Pampered Chef parties generally have all of the tools you need to cook at the party.
So I'd like to structure classes depending on what someone is looking for. I'd have a really basic beginner class for someone with little to no confidence in the kitchen...........in that class I could teach them basic knife skills and basic cooking skills. But then I thought it would be fun to have more specific classes like a pasta class or ice cream making. Fun classes and seasonal themes too! Right now I am in the process of thinking up menus and class structure.
Thanks for sharing your friends site, I am going to take a look to get some more ideas. Down the road, I would LOVE to be able to attend culinary school and perhaps follow the same path as your friend, having rental space to hold bigger classes.
Thanks for all of the advice and input!!!

I'd love to go to something like this! I enjoy cooking and find myself always on the hunt for new recipes, but not the ones that require unheard ingredients! lol!!! Offering classes to a set group of ppl at someone's house sounds like a good idea but I'd also suggest giving classss at ur house (if u feel comfortable with this) or renting a kitchen for those that would prefer using a different place. The lady that owned our house before us loved to teach cooking, like it was done yrs and yrs ago, using utensils and gadgets that were used back then. She offered these classes in a little "carriage house" in the backyard, I'd have loved taken this kind of class!
Let us know if you end up doing this, I'd love to try it out =)

Thank you for the suggestion, I was planning on holding them in my kitchen too. It would have to be a smaller group due to the layout but it would work. I'll keep u posted. I'm hoping to start the first classes in early 2017, aiming for January.

Great idea and good luck! I know a ton of people that would love to do this! As far as pricing, I am fine with all the pricing depending on what your cooking. Such as if you were doing pizza night it should be less than a lobster night.

I requested to join ! Would love to be in a group like that. Yes, this is something I would definitely be interested in. I think somewhere between$ 50 and 60 would be a fair price, depending on ingredients. Obviously, if you are serving lobster and filet mignon, it might be higher.
