I can't stand it when I see idiots bring their tiny dogs and cats on the subway and in the passenger cabins of planes. It's extremely inconsiderate and potentially very dangerous to people with allergies.

I'm an allergy sufferer myself AND have also brought my dog on a plane...if someone near me had a problem I'd move my seat or figure it out somehow...

He was in a proper carry-on and it sat at my feet, no one had anything to say other than how cute he was.

idiot? come on Chat Icon

ETA If I bring my dog anywhere,it somewhere he's allowed to be and I keep him in his bag and don't let him out or I hold him. I usually leave him home though...he doesn't like to go shopping..its not his thing

I think at any time dogs are inappropriate, even if allergies weren't an issue, it's still a health issue. Look, I know my dog doesn;t ahve fleas, ticks, rabies, whatever, but you can't guarantee that another dog doesn't. Plus thre's the smell, or they may not be trained, etc.

No offense to any one's children, but my dogs are cleaner & better trained than most kids. Should we stop allowing children into stores b/c they are in diapers, or they might drool? Chat Icon

I understand what you are saying, and yes I do agree that there are some irresponsible pet owners who will take a poorly-trained dog or a dog who is in desperate need of a bath to a public store. I think just like any thing else there will be a few who do not exercise common sense, but that does not mean that the exception becomes the rule.

I still think dogs in stores should be the exception, not the rule.

Dogs shed, dogs have dander, and if you have a severe dog allergy, you shoudn't be expected to stay in the house, or everywhere you go be bombarded with dander. I mean, I stay out of pet shops for this reason, but I can't avoid the pet shop, the drug store, the clothing store, the video store, etc. I need to live my life too. It's neccessary for me to go to the store, it's not neccessary for a dog. I should come first.

I think comparing dogs (no matter HOW clean) to children (no matter HOW dirty) is ridiculous. Children are human, dogs are animals, period.

My point was a lot of people were making comments that it was *gross* and *dirty*. Of course I know animals are not children, but I am merely making a point that my dog may annoy you, but sometimes there are kids in stores that totally sckeeve me out. Like a kid in a dirty diaper, or a kid who is throwing up from just having lunch or drooling or chewing everything in sight. Not what I want to experience while shoe shopping, but something you know you may face when in a public place that allows children, and also, I am sympathetic. You cannot always find a babysitter to shop, nor should you have to be forced to.

I understand where you are coming from. Unfortuantely the fact is that we may have to deal with grossness anywhere we go thanks to humans (like guy on the subway that reeks of BO). And we have to accept that because you can't tell a person they can't walk into Target because they smell bad. But you can deny animals. That's why you can't really compare the two.

Re: Poll-Is it appropriate to "tote" dogs into stores??

I must admit I am not a real fan of small dogs. I have two bigger dogs and I wish I could take them everywhere with me. But, in the end, they are dogs, not humans, so we take them to dog parks on weekends! I wish there were more restaurants/bars that were really just for pet owners so that people could choose if they wanted to be there. I think it is unecessary for small dogs to go to stores in bags- we make do not taking our bigger dogs to stores...

Transportation is tricky- not sure how I feel about dogs on subways/planes. I wish they were allowed on all forms of public transportation because it would make our lives easier but I understand about the whole allergy issue....in the end, a human's safety has to come first before the convenience factor of a pet owner. But life would've been so nice if we could've taken Casey on the subway when we lived in Manhattan!

Inappropriate. Dogs don't belong in MOST stores. I just don't see why it's necessary. And this didn't use to be such an issue until Paris Hilton made it the latest "fashion craze". If it's okay for someone to carry around their Yorkie, then it should be okay for me to carry around my 90lb Bull Mastiff - but I guarantee you people would speak up and have a BIG problem with me walking into Walmart or someplace with her. And yes, she has major separation anxiety issues. We deal.

I think comparing dogs (no matter HOW clean) to children (no matter HOW dirty) is ridiculous. Children are human, dogs are animals, period.

As for the other stuff:

Subways - necessary
Airplane cabins - necessary, legal, and regulated
Shopping carts - unacceptable
Carrying your small dog in an appropriate tote, if necessary, NOT as a fashion accessory, fine.

I agree with you girl!!!!I'd love to tote around my 75lb American Bulldog as well so she can eat those little dogs as a snack Chat Icon

I totally agree with this as well...
I don't have a dog, but if I did I wouldn't it be bringing it to stores except maybe Petco. I don't think any kind of animals belong in any stores unless it is a "helper" animal. Besides the allergy thing, no matter how well trained, you never know how an animal will act in a strange environment. What if some little kid runs up to your dog and scares it or pulls its tail? What if some sort of alarm goes off?

Also here's another thing to consider - unless you have the proper restraints, a dog travelling in a car is very dangerous. What if you got into an accident? Your dog would become a projectile and maybe be ejected from the car or injure someone else in the car.

Well I bring my dog to many many places with me. I do have a pet stroller for her, which she stays in and is completely zipped into and can not get out. She hates to be alone and if I can take her with me I will.
And she has been to both Babies r us and Buy Buy Babay many times!

Actually, whenever i have her out with me, sooo many people come up to ME and want to talk to me about her, where I got the stroller, etc. It actually gets annoying sometimes. So many parents will tell their child to look at the dog and bring their child to see her.
So I have never felt anyone was bothered by me having her in a place.

i don't see what the big deal is if a dog is confined and not bothering anyone.

As far as doing it as a "fashion accessory" as many have called it...that is the last thing I do it for.

I have to say, I hate when people make a leap and assume that b/c I have a small dog I treat them like they are a *Fashion Accessory* It really bothers me that people assumeChat Icon

BTW, how does Lola do in the stroller? I was pretty set against getting one in the beginning, but the more I get asked to bring my two little ones to people's houses & stuff, the more practical it seems, especially when most times their house/yard is not small-dog friendly.

Exactly why are small dogs viewed as fashion accesories? I don't get it! Paris hilton has nothing to do with me bringing Lola to a store!!!

She does good in the stroller. She just lays down in it and watches everyone. I throw a treat in their if I see her getting antsy. I got it originally for when I wanted to go walking around my neighborhood and she coulld'nt keep up lol. But now I leave it in my car and use it all the time.

I can't stand it when I see people toting around pets like a child. Leave the thing at home and shop like a human. Unless your pet intends to swipe their credit card to pay - leave em home!

it is not appropriate AT ALL
not even on an airplane..pple come b4 pets, if someone has alergies they should not have to suffer b/c ur cat or dog is secured properly...pple could die b/c of their allergies... also i hate seeing pet owners bring theere pet into stores with food..itS FOOD!! DO I WANT UR DOG TOUCHING ANYTHING I AM GOING TO EAT..UM NO!!!

I have students whose families own cats and dogs that make me sneeze. Itis forever in their clothing and bookbags. Unfortunately, I have to medicate myself (with Rx meds) to avoid a never-ending sneeze-fest. I must also have a classroom with a dry-erase board because inhaling chalk dust is not only dangerous for me, but many of my asthmatic students.

I could really take or leave this topic as a whole. I would prefer not to have animals next to me if I am eating out. Animals trained to assist those with special needs are an exception. They dont relieve themselves in stores.

BUT there are certainly reasons why a dog owner would need to take their dogs with them in their travels. While I am not a current dog owner (I hope to be when we own a home) nor an animal rights activist(for lack of a better term), I applaud those responsible enough to carry their pets in totes or strollers as the pads of their feet are not meant to walk or run great distances. It is simply more humane to animals.

Re: Poll-Is it appropriate to "tote" dogs into stores??

"Dont hate the player, hate the game"

plain and simple if you have a problem with dogs in stores, talk to the store and try to get them to change their rules rather than complaingin about the people who are actually abiding them. If a store allows pets, then it isnt "rude" of the "idiot" to bring their "thing" with themChat Icon

I don't think ANY dog or cat should be in any other store besides a pet store - unless it is posted outside the store that pets are welcome. For example, if you are in a pet friendly area such as Key West.
