I don't have kids or a pool but I would one.
I nassau now you need to have a fence around the yard and a separate fence around the pool. The must lock and the pool must have a surface alarm.. Ie.. if somone falls in an alarm will sound. I love having a pool. My mom got one recently and it is WONDERFUL!!!

I grew up with a pool. I was never ever allowed in the backyard alone during the summer months. Simple as that. It was drilled into my head to be careful.
Honestly, kids can drown in a pond, in a bathtub, in a bucket. It's not always a pool.
Me too. We had a large above ground pool and we were never allowed in it unless an adult was present. It's something I always remembered about childhood too - and I remember wearing a life jacket too.
We just bought a house with an above ground pool and took it down because it was not maintained at all. We do have plans to put another pool in - above ground as well. I just think above ground pools are safer in general, and are better on the taxes since they are not permanant structures.

we have a semi inground surrounded by a huge deck, we are not worried, we will make all the precautionary measures to make sure DD is safe.
our next home will also have an inground pool and again we will make sure it is fenced in.
edited to say- we had a pool when we were growing up too.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
We have a huge, flat back yard. The first thing that everyone says when they see our yard for the 1st time is "this is the perfect yard for an inground pool".
Dh says no way, ever!!! I agree. My DD is 3 and is an absolute Houdini. She is supervised every second, but I don't want to take a chance. I recently looked at another house and it had a fish pond. If we had bought the house, the first thing I would have done, was remove it. My Dh is dead set against trampolines too. he works with spinal surgeons and has seen too much.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I have a child and I would not get a pool. I've already had an incident with her. I have a few friends that have beautiful inground pools, huge. One time I was sitting right next to her she dropped something she was playing with into the pool, leaned over to get it and she fell in but on the shallow side! Just like that if I had not literally been right next to her she could have drowned she was only 2! Fences are the way to go!

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I grew up with an inground pool in the backyard. My parents had 7 kids and I think they got the pool so they would always know where we were.
I would love to have a pool, our lot has a good slope so it would take some extensive grading and retaining walls, that won't be happening in the near future.
I can understand the fear of accidents in a pool, but there are precautions you can take to deter animals/children from getting into the pool unobserved (fences, door alams, locks on gates etc.) and for your own kids teach them how to swim, teach them to respect water and of course always have someone responsible outside when the kids are in the pool.
Accidents do happen, but I think if you are cautious they are rare - in the neighborhood I grew up in, just about everyone had a pool and I never heard of anyone drowning - although I did hear about a dog drowning

Also I wanted to say, I think anyone who has kids should enroll their child in this. Its a few weeks to complete the program, if you watch the videos and read the stories it can save your childs life god forbid they fall in the pool
It teaches them to swim, float and survive in a real life situaiton if they fell in fully clothed with shoes on too.
If and when i ever have a child This will be my first priority since we will have an inground pool

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I grew up in nassau and practically lived at the town pool during the summer. No one had a pool in their backyards in my town - we all went to the town pool and swam on the swim team, took lessons, etc.
I dont want a pool in my backyard - I'd rather go to a town pool where there are lifeguards and I can be with DD. If I had one at home I think I'd be too nervous about a child falling in when my back was turned.

Honestly, not worth the hassle or anxiety for the two months out of the year we could use it.

The house we just bought has an inground pool. Their is a fence around our property and then another fence around our pool. Next year we plan on getting the loop lock pool cover.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
I just had a baby and I do have an ingroud pool also. I am worried. Although the pool is fenced in, I will be getting special locks for the sliding glass door that goes to the backyard, alrms for the gate around the yard and an alarm for in the pool...can;t be too safe I dont think.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
for me? No. We don't even have the kiddie pools filled with water unless we are outside. If I need to run in, the pool gets emptied. It only takes a moment.
I don't allow my children to go to houses where people have pools unless I will be with them the whole time.
I am a bit of a freak.

Re: Poll- Pools and children, would you be ok with having a pool with small children in the home?
Im pregnant now, and dh and I decided to get an inground pool. We plan on fencing off a section of the yard, putting a lock on the fence, and our kids will not be allowed in the backyard without one of us.
My parents have a pool in their florida room, and the florida room is the only exit to the backyard for her french bulldog ( the breed cant swim) so she installed a pool alarm, and it works great

How does a pool alarm work? I guess when the surface of the pool is disturbed it sounds? Can you tell me more about it? thanks

You arm the alarm, and when the water becomes disturbed, it goes off, it can sense movement
