Re: Poll Rent or Own during TTC?Jumping the gun but if we do become preggo should I start looking for a 2 bedroom?
Until we got married in September, DD shared my bedroom at my parents' house with me. Now, we rent a 2 bedroom apartment. We won't be buying until after I finish school & that's 3 or 4 years off at the least. We may consider renting a bigger apartment if I am pregnant when our lease is up here.
I wish we had more room, but I do not want to wait another 4 years to own a house before we have #2. There will always be a reason that the time isn't "perfect" to have a child. Right now, I only work part-time & go to school part-time so I'lll be home with DD & baby #2 more than I would be able to be after we buy a house & I have to work full time. I'd rather make do with 2 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment & be home with them more & then buy a few years down the road.

My parents had a one bedroom apartment with three kids in it and made it work. Then they moved to a 5 bedroom house and none of my siblings suffered at all. I was their fourth. If you can own a home when you are TTC or having a child, great. If not, the world will not come to an end and as long as you have a roof over your head and food on your plate, you will be fine.
this is our theory too. we're in an ample-sized one bedroom. we can fit a crib in our bedroom, if we're lucky

Re: Poll Rent or Own during TTC?Jumping the gun but if we do become preggo should I start looking for a 2 bedroom?
i think this is strictly a personal decision. DH and I decided that we wanted to wait until we bought a house before we officially start TTC. But, we have already started house hunting and will hopefully be in a house this year. if it was further off, we would consider TTC now in our 2 bedroom apartment and make it work.
my mom did not purchase her home until i was 12. before that, we rented and moved around a ton. it was not ideal. i would rather not see that for my kids, if i can avoid it. and we know that once we have kids, it will be much harder for us to save $ for a down payment.

Re: Poll Rent or Own during TTC?Jumping the gun but if we do become preggo should I start looking for a 2 bedroom?
Now that I think about it, DH and I have a goal to be homeowners by the time our first child starts kindergarten. Since our top criteria for home buying is school district, it makes sense for us.This is a reasonable and attainable goal. The district we live in now is fine, but I dont want to start my kids in one school and move them because we simply cannot afford to buy a home where we rent right now. Once we by a home - thats it until we retire.
We are both 37 now and were 35 when we married. Neither one of us owned homes when we married. Frankly, if we waited to TTC until we bought a home, I could feasibly have mush more difficulties than I am having now - more associated with age.
We have a huge apartment with three bedrooms - enough for us and two children to be comfortable and our rent is low for what we have. It would be foolish for us to leave. I can honestly say, we knew we would TTC soon after our wedding because of our ages, so we opted for a larger apartment with more than one bedroom. We never would have taken anything less than two bedrooms.

We own but it is a small one bedroom with little hope of adding on.. So we will be moving one day. We figure the baby can sleep in our room for a year.. Then we are moving.

We have the same plan we own a one bedroom, so we won't buy a house for another year or two

I don't post on this board because DH and I are not officially TTC yet. But I have been lurking for a while to learn as much as I can and prepare for when we begin later this year. I hope you don't mind me posting (I feel like I'm violating some sacred ground lol). I just had to say how much better I feel about TTC after reading this thread. DH and I rent a 1 bedroom now. We have been casually looking at 2 bedroom places. We are always worrying if we'll be able to afford this, that and the other thing. Everything that has been said on this thread is so true. There really isn't a perfect financial time to have a baby because we're always going to have financial difficulties. So we shouldn't plan around that. To see so many of you making it work has given me a lot of hope and I don't feel so scared to begin TTC.
Congrats to those of you who have received BFPs and good luck to those of you working on a BFP!

We bought a house 7 months before we got married. Honestly, if I didn't own a home I don't think I would be TTC. It is a personal decision though. DH & I always agreed that we would not start until we had something of our own.

Re: Poll Rent or Own during TTC?Jumping the gun but if we do become preggo should I start looking for a 2 bedroom?
Ah, well, we're in a totally different position - we own, but it's a one bedroom apartment! We're TTCing now, but we'll definitely be in a 2BR place by the time any little one can get here.
Our bedroom is not big enough to fit a crib, but if you can do it, I don't think it matters much. It's nice to have a house, but some people live in apartments all of their lives. My grandparents had three children in a one bedroom.
