Re: POLL: What kind of vehicle will you have as your family car?

We have a Honda CR-V. At this stage in my life I have no desire to drive a mini-van.
Ditto. It has 4 doors, a large amount of space, and gets decent gas milage. Compared to my civic, the gas is terrible, but compared to a lot of cars out there, it's good. We don't have a baby yet, but we bought this in mind that it will be more family friendly than our 2 door cars.

I was wondering- all you SUV people- when will gas prices be so high that you downgrade. $3 a gallon? $4?
I, for one, would rather take the money saved in gas and put it to my child's future- it seems such a waste to throw it in a car.

If gas was 10.00 a gallon would you sell your car and ride your bike everywhere?
I don't drive an SUV! But I don't hate people who do. EXCEPT for the woman who cant drive them because the suv is to big for them and the people who think they own the road cause they are taller then me!

My wife got into an accident on the highway two months ago and totalled a brand new Jeep Liberty.
Came out of it with just a couple of scrapes.
We won't be downgrading anytime soon.
Anyways...
Higher gas prices = less people on the road = less traffic = me getting to work quicker in my gas guzzling SUV
Flame on.

I won't be downgrading if gas goes up. After driving an SUV, I will never buy a regular car. We have a mid sized SUV that gets pretty good mileage and it is not a gas guzzler.
Someone rearended us when we yeilded for a police car a few days before I gave birth and we came out unscathed. The only damage to the car was to a bent exhaust pipe and an off track drivers seat bc our dog slammed against it on impact. The lady's Maxima was totaled. I truly believe that nothing happened to us bc we were driving an SUV. So in my case, driving an SUV saved my child's future.

We've decided for environmental reasons and budgetary reasons that we will never own an SUV. DH was raised in a family of 5 and my Dad was always fixing up our house, carting wood etc.. We both survived without one.
Maybe a mini-van but we're not too keen on that either. We are only planning for two kids.
Just a question. What's the difference between an SUV and a mini Van environmentally? I really have no idea...
SUV's traditionally get much lower gas mileage, therefore, burns more emmissions. As long as the American public wants to continue to drive SUV's (as they are right now) our air will be more polluted than ever and our dependence on our domestic reserves of oil and the oil rich countries of the Middle East will continue to grow. If you travel abroad you will very rarely see an SUV used by a family and they get along fine without them. Many foreigners, even western Europeans, think our use of SUV's is irresponsible environmentally and hypocritical concerning our political actions in the Middle East. I've had several people in Italy, France and England say these exact words to me.
DH and I will never own an SUV. We are going to try to do without a mini-van. One of our cars is a 2005 and the other a 2003. The next car we will purchase... three or four years down the road will be, most likely, some sort of hybrid.
I see many of you prefer SUV's for safety reasons... so isn't the real problem reckless driving? Maybe we need to crack down more on reckless drivers.

Gas is considered a largely inelastic product. The percentage of quanitity demanded is not determined by the percentage of price change. If it was suddenly on sale for 50 cents a gallon we would not be storing it up like other products. It might decrease a bit but not to the same degree as the price increase.
On the other hand, clothing and non-perishable goods are highly elastic. For example, many consumers stock up on laundry detergent, paper towles, even socks and underwear when it's on sale.

Re: POLL: What kind of vehicle will you have as your family car?
My friend just traded her SUV in for the a Honda Minivan. She said with 2 car seats, she just couldn't do it. There was no room if she wanted other people to ride with them.
DH swears he would never own a minivan so I might have to get one in my name .

I was thinking the same thing! The Amish aren't freaking about gas prices. Maybe they have the right idea!
