Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

DH and I disagree about what is needed for our in-ground pool. Our yard is fenced. We were given a laser pool alarm by a cousin who never ended up using it. My DH thinks this is enough. I am thinking we also need a fence. (DS is one)
WWYD? Thanks!

Definitely get a fence! We have an inground pool and are getting a fence before next summer. DD is only a month old, so we don't need it this year.

Definitey a fence. Little people are quick and can be in the pool before you turn around. I have both for our pool.

I'd get the fence and use the alarm!!! Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

I think a fence is a must...the alarm is optional.

We have a gated fence to get into the backyard. And our pool (semi inground) is completely enclosed by a fence with gate.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

We are in the process of putting an inground pool in right now. We were having a hard time deciding what to do, but ultimately because of code and safety we decided on a fence for the pool area. We also have our yard fenced in. We thought about the door alarms but figured we would get annoyed by them, become sensitized to them, and either turn them off or ignore them which would defeat the purpose. I am probably going to look into some other safety device though, like an actual pool alarm.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

Isn't there a law that you need both if your pool is over 18" deep? Regardless, I would get a fence and use the alarm. Better safe than sorry.

This is the type of fencing I put around our pool...Link It is as good as a permenent fence but it removable, safe and very easy to maintain.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

I would say a fence is a must.

The town I live in requires a fence w/in a certain distance of the pool, my sister has a fenced in yard and had to put in an additonal fence around the pool as well as door alarms on the door that opened into the pool area.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

I personally don't have a pool, but my parent's have an IG pool...

I want both... they are planning on fencing, but I want to supply an alarm or one of those "wrist watches" you put on the kids when they are over there. I don't think personally that there's such a thing as "too safe" when it comes to pools.

there is but if your backyard is fenced, that can count as the pool fence so anything extra is optional.

and i'm totally crashing here, but i'd definitely get the fence.

I would do the fence and the alarm. Pools are dangerous things and it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Pool Alarm, Fence, or both

An alarm will only help if someone is in the house to hear the alarm. If a neighborhood kid falls in the pool while you are out, it's not going to help anyone. (If you own a pool, you have to assume that neighborhood kids may fall in.....). A fence will (hopefully) keep them away from the pool in the first place.

We have a fence around our property and then another one around our pool. No alarms and like another PP said if the alarm goes off it doesn't really help if you aren't close enough to hear it. We also have a lock on our fence. Once your kids get older if you can an alarm you can put the door chime on to let you know if anyone leaves the house.
