Re: Portland Maine?
It is a nice city & has a lot of nice surrounding areas to explore. You can fly Jetblue out of JFK to Portland for as cheap as $49 & the flight is 45 minutes.
I fly in there all the time as my parents live up further from Portland.

From the South Shore in Nassau, it is about 5-5.5 hours.

Re: Portland Maine?
He is thinking - rent another vehicle, drive there for a few days, drive back & he booked a lighthouse sunset cruise for that evening. He is also the only driver.
Is that feasible or would we be better flying then renting up there then maybe driving back to take our time & do some sight-seeing.

I am not sure how the car rental fees are for cars being used to come back here, but I am sure you can get a good deal with unlimited mileage. If you are not use to being in the car for so long, it is better to fly & then rent. Last summer when I flew to see my parents, I flew in & rented a car. I think it all cost me $200 for the week.

Re: Portland Maine?
My DH drove last year--it wasn't a bad drive. We stopped for lunch & then we made it there in the later afternoo & had time to go walking around & to find a place for dinner-- so you could drive & still make plans for that evening.
I liked it, but didn't love it--it would get boring after a few days. We just stopped there briefly ( 2 days I think) on our way to Bar Harbor.
