Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
Give your baby a taste of the World
I was really excited when I read this article...b/c I've heard it said often (especially in discussions on the boards) about how children's palate's can't enjoy certain foods.
reading this, it gave me hope that I will be able to get my kid to eat more than Kraft mac and cheese and chicken tenders.
it never made sense to me, that children in the rest of the world could possibly only tolerate food that bland especially in certain cultures.
I was also very heartened by the breastfeeding tidbit and the study about peaches. the idea that children get acustomed to certain tastes to me from the breast milk makes a lot of sense, and it would stand to reason that perhaps their taste buds would more readily accept other flavors than say a formula fed baby, which doesn't have the nuance of flavors found in breast milk.
anyway, I just thought I'd share...especially for those that are keen on making their own baby food. there are some nice and easy recipes and suggestions for shaping the baby's palate.

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
mine has had mac and cheese twice and chicken tenders maybe 10 times in his life.
he loves spicy food. mexican is his favorite.
I swear the kid was on a liquid diet for 18 months straight, only BM.
add in restrictions to dairy, soy, and gluten...he is a vegetable machine.
we also brain wash him...like i let him cut up peppers, mushrooms, celery...while we are chopping dh and I are munching saying "oh my goodness, I love green peppers"
he lives on cherry tomatoes and olives. that is in his snack cup at the park.

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
It is certainly true. While my older DD is picky (but only because she has a sensitive stomach), my younger ones eat anything.
I'm Greek, DH is Pakistani. Our kids eat pastitisio, moussaka, chicken biryani, chicken curry, daal, etc. Spiciness doesn't bother them at all, they're used to it. Our 4 year old loves cauliflower and brussel sprouts, you should see the looks I get in the store when she begs for me to buy her brussel sprouts
I think that it is definitely possible to train them to eat better than just chicken fingers and grilled cheese. You just have to start them early and not even make it an option, kwim?
ETA; We usually just skip over baby food btw. By the time my kids were even interested it was time for table food, and they got whatever everyone else was eating!

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
I refused to eat any baby food when I was a baby, my mom tried every recipe she could think of. My first food was Ox tail ragu. I always ate what my mother served at the dinner table which was a variety of ethnic cuisine.
I think the only time I ever had chicken fingers were the McNuggets on special trips to McDonalds, so I truly believe what this article says.

we weren't a baby food house either.
I would just make a weekly stew and he would eat out of that from 8 months on.

I used organic baby food for Veg and Fruit (too lazy) but for meats, DD NEVER ate baby food- just ate what we were eating...
My DD eats Sushi for goodness sakes- raw fish!

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
I have been giving my babies all kinds of food, and they love to eat. They haven't tasted meat yet at 9 months, but will eat all kinds of fruits and veggies, including beans, tofu, edamame, pickes... I have given them grilled cheese and mac and cheese, but want those to be occasional, not an every day thing.

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
this is very cool, thanks!
i wonder if this has anything to do with DS's eating habits... he was BFed for 5 months and he will eat absolutely anything, with the rare exception (such as brussels sprouts).
we also give DS whatever we make - so long as it doesn't have peanuts in it (we don't know if he's allergic yet). anything with garlic or other spices, he gets, and he eats it all!
i also do not like ordering a separate meal for DS. he doesn't eat that much, i prefer to give him pieces of what DH and i are eating intead of ordering from the kids menu (which i've done a couple of times and the only time i was happy with what he was served was the panini-pressed grilled cheese from panera, which wasn't at all greasy).

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
awesome article! .
I think its great that the article suggests looking globally for ideas for food to try to feed baby.
I was born where beluga caviar is harvested and my grandfather would go fishing for it every morning for me, because it was the only solid food I really cared to eat. Its a very high protein, nutritious food.
Well now, I'm craving it all the time now, and the only thing keeping us from going broke is that its unpasteurized and I'm really scared to eat large amounts of it.
When I was around 1.5, my parents immigrated the whole family to Italy. I think that experience really helped to round out my palette and I have a much more adventurous attitude towards food than most people I've ever met.

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
At the end of the day, some kids are going to be picky eaters regardless of what they ate as babies or what their mothers ate when they were in the womb, or while they were breastfeeding. I spent 8 months eating all kinds of food while I was breastfeeding him...still he is a crap eater.
I love to cook, I spent ages cooking food for my son when he was a baby, and you know what, he wasn't all that interested in food...and almost 4 years on, he still isn't interested in food. We sit down to the most amazing food now, and he asks for a ham sandwich with mayonnaise. He is who he is, I can't change him and I realised that at an early age.
Some kids just are picky. Can't do a thing about it! Again, I check everyday to make sure he doesn't have scurvy, he still has all his teeth, and that he can run around the playground. So I must be doing something right.

ITA (except I didn't BF)
You can do everything under the sun, but unfortunately if a kid is a picky eater there isn't much you can do to change it. We offer a ton of different things to Jack - some things he will eat - some he won't touch (i'm even talking about things like Mac and Cheese)
I have learned to accept it. At 2 years old he is still off the charts for everything so I'm not that worried.
I am praying that this next baby is a good eater though - it will relieve soooo much stress.

While I think it is true that some kids are just picky eaters, two of my three brothers are much more picky then my third brother, sister and myself, there is something to be said for what they wrote in the article. Out of all the foster brothers and sisters I have had, not one of them came to our house eating a well balanced diet. With in a few weeks they would eat veggies and a larger variety of foods.
I think part of it is my mother would make one meal and we all had to eat what was on the table, there was no short order cooking in her house. So it forced us to try things. I really do believe that children can be trained to like a variety of different flavors and also try different foods.

Re: Posting an older article I read in Pregnancy magazine the other day...regarding baby food.
I just posted the article as interesting reading. not to imply that those will "picky eaters" haven't tried or are doing a bad job.
obviously every child/parent/situation is different. it was just another perspective AND it has recipes. I can't see the harm in AT LEAST trying.
I don't know anyone that likes EVERY SINGLE thing out there. I HATE dark meat poultry. always have. always will.
I consider myself to be a picky eater..b/c there are certain things I just won't eat. but I don't knock it until I try it...except sweet breads and pigs knuckles and olive loaf. I will knock them without trying them. the idea of that makes me want to barf

I definitely find that true. In our house I don't cook separate meals-whats served is what you get. And everyone has to have a certain amount of their food, 6 bites for protein, 5 bites for veggies, etc. It works for us.
The only exception is my older DD- a lot of things I cook will make her sick to her stomach, even though she enjoys eating them. So if I know I'm making one of those things she gets to make her own sandwich or waffles/pancakes for dinner (its sounds bad but she loves doing it )

I'm not taking any offense - believe me, I wish every night that Jack would eat things. There is nothing more frustrating than cooking this big delicious meal and him shoving it away without giving it a second glance.
He won't even try cheese - and this is the son of someone who was called "Rat" in college because I eat cheese like it's going out of style.
The other day we were at a playdate - I almost did a cartwheel because he was interested in one of the kids mac and cheese. I put a tiny spoonful on a plate for him. He actually picked up the piece of macaroni (I was doing flips inside) he put the piece up to his closed lips. Licked his lips and put it down. Didn't even open up that little mouth of his! ARGH!!!
I will admit that I used to force feed him things - but realized that got neither of us anywhere and it was pretty ugly so I stopped that pretty fast!
Sorry to ramble on - can you tell it still bugs me?!

that is not necessarily true... i was able to get baby food for 30 cents a jar when on sale and i would stock up... to fill the same jars with home made food it typically cost me 50-60 cents.... if not more
