Posting for a friend.....

Does anyne know a "rescue" or shelter that would take a dog that has previously nipped/bit a child?

A friend of mine is going crazy trying to rehome his dog. He has a 2 year old son and the dog is a very happy dog, but has some food agression issues and he cant keep him around his son.

This is the info he posted on FB and if anyone has any links/number I would REALLY like to help him.

Hello Facebook Family,

I am writing to you today to ask for help. A few days ago our wonderful dog Max bit Nate again. The first time was last year when Nate was just 1. Most importantly, Nate is totally fine, and we are so thankful for that. But now we are faced with a heartbreaking situation... giving up our dog, our friend, Max. We have already started contacting rescues and keep hearing the same thing... "we can not take in aggressive dogs." Aggressive is a harsh word but looking at Max's past I guess it fits. He has nipped at a few people in the past, mostly food related or due to the fact that he was grabbed by the back of the neck to stop him from going out the door.

Max is a 5 and a half year old Hound Mutt we adopted from North Shore Animal League when he was 4 months old. Because he is a hound he has a very distinctive and funny howl. Anyone that has met Max has seen just how happy-go-lucky he is. He greets new people with a loud howl and lots of sniffs. He is not a licker! He knows basic commands: sit, down, wait, leave it, stay, come. He has always been great with kids, but due to his food aggression I would not place him in a home with children under the age of 13. 13 is just an estimate, but I feel that any child needs to be able to be taught when not to approach him. 13 is an age I feel that the child can be responsible enough to help take care of Max as well and participate in his training.

We are looking for a suitable home for Max, one without small children. Someone who would be able to continue his training to help him with his food aggression. An owner(s) who will also take care of his other health issues.

Max has muscular dystrophy. It is not degenerative so his health should not get worse as he gets older. For this he gets pills 2x a day. These pills may be bought at a local GNC or other vitamin store.

Max also has environmental allergies and requires shots every three weeks, and more frequently during the winter months.

If we can not find Max a home we may have no other choice but to euthanize him, something we will try our hardest to avoid. We want to make sure that we have exhausted all of our options and tried every possible way to find Max an appropriate, loving, and caring home.

Thank you for any and all of your help!

Have they tried a trainer yet to help with the aggression?

My dog had similar issues , we used Best Friends Dog Training and Murray is a completely different dog now. There is definitely hope. Chat Icon

If they got him from NSALA, then they should be able to send him back there. I don't see why they wouldn't, right?

They do not take dogs back if they can help it. They will fight you tooth and nail. Short of leaving the dog on the doorstep and running, I doubt they'll take it back. They wouldn't take ours back who bit both my brother and sister on the face and went through many, many trainers.

ETA: We eventually found a "last resort" shelter in Queens that would take her and would not euthanize her or give her to a shelter that might euthanize her. I'll try to find the name, but I'm not sure if they are still around.

my sisters dog had very aggressive food issues.. would growl and show teeth. never bit my neice but got close enough that they had to get rid of dog. North Shore Animal league took her. I believe they foundher a home without any small children.
