Pot Lights / Recessed Lighting / Hi-Hats....

....whatever it is that *you* call them - can you tell me what you have, what you'd do different, what you like about your set-up?

We're starting on our LR project and I'd like to put pot lights in - but I want small ones, like 4" - just not sure if that will emit enough light in our room or if we need to go with the 6".

Also, if you have a fireplace, did you opt for eyeballs or just straight potlights? If you had a light fixture in a hallway...did you keep it or replace it with a pot light?

Pics are welcome Chat Icon

Thank you!

DH put them in every room of our house, since none of the rooms had ceiling lights. Depending on which room, he put in a mixture of straight hi-hats and eyeballs, depending if it was going to shine down on the walls with pictures, or at seating over a lounge chair. The ones in the living room are 4" and the ones in our bedrooms and kitchen are 6". I don't think I ever took pictures of the lights, but if you want, I can. DH put them all in and wired them to switches on the wall.

ETA: The get hot when you sit under them, the use a lot of electric, but they give great light! And the bulbs, at least the ones we have, are expensive! Chat Icon

Re: Pot Lights / Recessed Lighting / Hi-Hats....

Thanks Trish. Just before we moved out of our apartment, the landlord installed pot lights. They were 6" and holy-hot. I assumed it was b/c there were so many of them -for the space, imo- and b/c they were 6". Are there different types of bulbs you can get?

I am having the bedrooms wired for chandeliers....the eyeballs are causing me hesitation.

Yes, there are different bulbs... I'd have to ask DH because I know in each room, we have different bulbs.

And do you notice a temp difference in each room or are they all hot? Are they on dimmers?

i would recommend dimmers for all recessed lighting. It helps create a nice atmosphere when you have company. We have flood lights in our cans and they can be very bright I usually always have them dimmed.

Our hi-hats were just put in yesterday. We have a two bedroom coop and we put 8 of the 4" hats in the living room. They are defintely asthetically pleasing (my parents have the bigger/older ones). Originally we were going to put in 6 but the electrician told us that 6 wasn't enough. I can take a picture of them if you would like!

Yes, all are on dimmers. The bigger sized ones we have in our bedrooms are a soft spot like light. They are not as hot. The ones in our living room and soon to be family room are smaller and some have halogen type bulbs in them.

The living room ones -
these are not as hot:

as these (but these give way more light):

These are the softer versions we have in the bedrooms:

I will say that the ones I posted above of the living room.. the outer parts WERE white. I guess the heat of the bulbs and the 7 years time have discolored them to a yellow/tan color. We need to replace them so they are white again.
