potty training
DS is 2 yrs 4 months. He is speech delayed. Autism/ASD has not been ruled out. Currently he has a vocabulary of about 30 words but very little functional vocabulary.
I was just reading a thread on parenting about potty training and seeing the ages of the children. I have not even begun to think about potty training because he does not indicate to me if he has gone and if I ask if he went I usually get told y the opposite.
How do you potty train a child with limited speech? Just curious now.

when DS' therapists started potty training he was non-verbal and they used sign language. The sign was the letter "T" for toilet and to shake it. However he still may be too young. They started DS young (kind of at my urging because he showed some interest) and honestly it was a disaster.

My son had limited speech and we used PECS therapy. Pictures, story books and DVDs on potty training. Age was a BIG factor though I started at the age of three and it took about 4 months.

Thanks for the reassurances. I am not in any rush for this to happen but definately worry about potty training in the future.

We used story books and pictures on potty training - my child was almost 3 1/2 when we started and it took about a day and a half. I didn't let myself freak out about when it would happen and I think it made us both calmer. A perk of special ed preschool is they do not insist you try before you are ready. I started on a week off from school when my mother was able to take the time that my husband and I were at work. It really helped to have my mom agree to do everything we told her which was essentially you can't leave or do anything other than potty training. My SIL who has 3 typical kids was a big support since with one child she had a deadline (for a program) and said how much harder and longer the process it was. It was as if my niece knew the pressure.

When I taught, and when the child was ready to be potty trained, they were taken on a schedule to a potty. I always used a Pecs icon, and a visual step analysis, regardless if they were verbal or non. And right before actually starting the potty training, I would always do a social story with them, read regular stories about potty training, pretend play ( taking dolls to the toilet etc). Most kids were potty trained within a few days, but they key is they had to be ready. I had a little girl that was ready at 20 months and a nother boy ready at 4 ( and of course, all in between).

I'm a special education teacher and one of the things that we do is potty training. Usually we time-train children who are non-verbal. If you'd like more info on time-training, please fm me and I can try to fill you in on what's worked for me and my students!

I do not know your son personally but he does not tell you and is not giving indications might mean he is not ready. My son has a speech delay and has been diagnosed with verbal apraxia and is potty training at 4. He just may not be ready. Many boys do not potty train as early as two. Talk to your ped/therapist about this. My ped has a son who has no disability and did not start potty training until he was well into the age of three. I tried potty training my son at 2.5 because baby #2 was on the way. Turns out he was not ready and I was driving myself crazy.

No he is definitely not ready and I am honestly in no rush. Not even really thinking about trying yet. Just suddenly had a kinda panic attack about how since he does not really speak. I actually just spoke to his teacher about it this week and she said that he does not seem ready for it yet either. He is perfectly content to walk around in his wet poopy pants. I just didn't know how I was going to do it. And I know that children should not be compared and I don't compare him to other children but he is between 2 other family members and the older ones and the younger ones are both training and we keep getting asked when we are going to train. I feel pressure from a couple of different people to potty train and I just don't think he is ready for it yet. It would not surprise me if he trains himself when he is ready.

I know I'm answering this late, but maybe when you're asked by family members if you're potty training, can you just answer, "no." and leave it at that? Don't feel bad or make excuses, just answer matter of fact and leave it at that. If they ask why, just say "he's not ready". This is what I did with my DD#1 (who is typical). She didn't potty train til after she was 3. And my MIL did make me feel bad about it, she even told family members that it was my fault DD was not trained, so I let her take DD for a week, and she tried to train her. And guess what...not trained! When she was ready, she trained in a minute!

potty training
I actually went out about 2 weeks ago and bought a potty for him (only because I had expiring BRU rewards and enough to make it free). It's in the house and he knows what it is for, but has no desire to use it. So it's just sitting there. But he is starting to tell me that he has pooped - even though it is usually pee-pee. But it's a start.
