Prayer needed...Updated at bottom of page 2/9
I saw my cardiologist today. After the EKG, Echo and exam my doctor told me that the leak in my right valve has gotten more pronounced due to the increased blood volume. The leak was upgraded today to "moderate" from "slight" before I was PG. I expected this to happen and we knew the risks but I am scared. This was not caused by weight gain, just increased blood volume and water. All part of the heart defect I was born with. I am 26 weeks and he thinks that the leak might get more pronounced as the pregnancy progresses.
Please pray that the leak does not get worse. If it does, I have to change hospitals and have the baby in Columbia Presbyterian (where cardiologist is), and change my OB (which I DO NOT want to do) instead of NSUH in Manhasset (where OB works out of). I have to play everything by ear, so the "birth plan" I wanted to have is pretty much a question mark at this point.
Thanks for listening ladies.

Re: Prayer needed...
do you have mitral valve prolapse? My DH developed an implant to repair mitral valve prolapse. The device is in clinical trials at Columbia (and other hospitals around the country).
If you want more info, FM me.

What I have is called L-transposition naturally corrected. Basically it is tricuspid valve prolapse. Usually valve replacement is what is done to correct it at birth, but my body has basically compensated for it my whole life (long medical explanation on how this is possible) thus the "naturally corrected" term. What I have is pretty rare. Only 5% of congenital heart defects are L-transpositions, 1% of those naturally corrected. That is why I see a congenital heart specialist at Columbia Presbyterian. He is excellent and people come from all over the US and beyond to see him. That is awesome that your Dh developed that device. Can you ask him if it can be used for L-transposition? I doubt it, because I imagine my Dr. would have told me about it if it would work for me.
Thanks for all your prayers and well wishes ladies...you all are the best!

unfortunately not. The leaflets are different on the tricuspid vs. the mitral valve. It wasn't developed for use on the tricuspid - sorry!
Sounds like you're in good hands! I hope your pregnancy doesn't further aggrevate your condition.

Re: Prayer needed...
Do you have an OB at Columbia? If not I would suggest meeting with one just in case things progress quickly. It might make you feel better to have a plan a and a plan B. I hope everything goes smoothly though!

Re: Prayer needed...
Hang in there! 26 weeks is a really good point to have it progress, think of how it could have progressed earlier. The chances of it getting significantly worse before giving birth is not so great. Try to remember that. I pray your at the worst now and that you will be fine.

UPDATE: So My DH and I talked last night about our options. We fell that we should have a plan A, B, and C.
Plan A - deliver at NSUH at manhasset with no complications and ride this out, have a natural delivery (with an epidural).
Plan B - My cardiologist suggested I meet with this other cardiologist that he trained at NSUH. Consult with her so she on call and ready if something unexpected happens. Plus she will have my chart and my medical history.
Plan C - Consult with an OB at Columbia. If the leak in the valve gets worse and I need surgery after birth, I will deliver there and have valve replacement immediately after delivery.
I have to be pragmatic, yet pray for the best. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and God is in control. Also, that how I react and handle this is more important to my unborn child and DH than trying to control something that I can't control. I will keep you all posted as things progress. I am seeing the cardilogist at NSUH in two weeks and seeing my cardiologist at Columbia again in four weeks. I should know more then. Thanks Ladies for all the prayers.

I think having plans A B and C sounds like a very good idea. Keep all of your options open.
I'll say a for you and your baby that everything works out just fine

I am sorry you are going through this
But you are doing everything right! You are exploring all your options and checking out the doctors at NSUH is so smart.
Good luck with everything and keep us posted!

wishing you all the best - I think it is very smart of you to already have come up with so many plans. You are lucky to have such a supportive dh too. I can only imagine how hard this is on you and send you all the hugs and prayers I can!
