Prayers for my Dad **Better Update 9/15**
I found out last week that my dad has rectal cancer. He goes in tomorrow for his surgery. It's pretty major surgery and the end result is a colostomy bag. They are hoping to get all the cancer this way so that's the good news. I know so many of us are going through rough times and so much cancer news. If anyone can spare some prayers and good thoughts for my dad I would appreciate it.
Thanks!
Update: Well I just spoke with him. His spirits are good but I'm sure he's scared. Unfortunately they suspect it's Stage 3 cancer, I didn't know it was that bad and he'll have chemo and radiation after.
Monday Night Update: My dad is finally out of surgery. He was in the OR for 8 hours. The doctors feel they got everything. There is no evidence that it spread. One pathology report has to come back but the doctors really feels that will be good. He did have to get the colostomy bag but he knew that going into the surgery. He will be in ICU until tomorrow some time then in the hospital until Friday if all goes well. Then he'll have home health in while he's at home. I am fairly estranged from my father so this has really been an emotional roller coaster for me. Luckily he has what sounds like an amazing girlfriend who has been by his side in all of this and doesn't plan on going anywhere. I am grateful for that. Once he's home and on his feet I'm going to try to go visit him. Thank you so much for all the prayers, they worked. I am so grateful that my dad came through such an awful surgery. It has been a long day.
**Update 9/9**
He's doing well, better than they expected actually. He says his pain level is only a 5 and he is using the pain pump less often than they expected. Tomorrow they will get him up to walk and he'll get out of ICU and into a regular room. Thanks for all the prayers.
**Update 9/11**
My dad is still doing well. I haven't been able to talk to him because his doctors decided to keep him in ICU for the one on one nurse care. Hopefully tomorrow he'll be in a regular room. His girlfriend says he's coming along nicely. He ate for the first time today and they got him up to walk around. He'll be in the hospital a little longer than expected but overall he is doing really well. Thank you for all the prayers. He still has a long road with chemo and radiation but one step at a time for now.
**9/12 Update** Well my dad spent another day in ICU. He's still doing OK but he couldn't go to the bathroom when they took his catheter out so they had to put it back in and he has a low grade fever so he's on antibiotics. Please pray that no real infection develops and he can go in to a regular room tomorrow.
**9/13** Well my dad didn't make it into a regular room today. He took a turn for the worse this evening and had to be intubated and airlifted to another hospital due to fluid in his lungs. I don't know a whole lot more right now as his girlfriend was trying to make her way to the other hospital while he was being transferred and she hasn't been able to go in to see him yet. Please keep praying that he bounces back from this. Once I know more I'll decide if I need to get there or not. Unfortunately I have some things going on here that make it difficult to travel right now but I can't imagine losing my dad without seeing him one last time. Please pray it doesn't come to that.
**9/15**
My dad is improving nicely. Thank you everyone for your prayers and good thoughts. He is still sedated and intubated but they think he may be able to breathe on his own by tomorrow and they are talking about him coming home at the end of the week possibly. He will then start with the oncologist once he is home. I hate that he has to go through so much but hopefully the chemo and radiation give him the cure rate they anticipate.

Re: Prayers for my Dad-Cancer Surgery tomorrow.
I will be praying for your father...and there is an upside. Although he is going to have major surgery and will do chemo and radiation - they generally will not be agressive unless they think they can get rid of the cancer.
My mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 stomach cancer last year at this time. She had 2/3 of her stomach and part of her pancreas removed. She did Chemo/Radiation for six months and was done in June. She is just now starting to feel a little better.
It's a rough road and very difficult - but, If you have your dad with you it'll be worth it in the long run.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I don't think he knows what he's in for and that makes me sad but he kind of got a new lease on life when he got sober 5 years ago so I know he really wants to live.

So glad the surgury went well. It is so hard whenyou have a strained relationship with a sick family member. I think you and your father will get a lot out of the visit you plan when he is up to it.

I'm so happy to hear that your dad came thru the surgery ok. Like you, I know that rollercoaster of emotions.
I hope that he has a quick recovery, and I pray that the pathology report comes back ok.

Thank you. It is definitely a whirlwind of emotions. I am glad he pulled through though, I don't think I was ready to lose him. It makes me realize I have a lot to resolve and I guess there is no time better than the present.

I will absolutely keep him in my thoughts. I just had a friend go through the exact surgery last Thursday and he's doing pretty well also.
