Pre-K kids - do they tell you what they did in school?

When I ask DD what she did in school today her answer is always "nothing". I am not sure if she is trying to keep it a secret, she doesn't remember, or she doesn't think it matters....?

If I ask her something directly (who was the helper at snacktime?) she will give me a straight answer though.

It's frustrating since I don't always know what to ask in order to pry an answer out of her.

Do your kids do this?

DD's favorite word is "Nothing". Did it in Pre-K, and still doing it in K. I can often eventually get something out of her, but not always.....

DS is the same way. I try to ask the most specific questions I can think of to get an answer.

I usually get "I played."

But, like you, when I ask specific questions, she'll usually answer them. So, I think specific questions is the way to go.

Questions I ask:
1) Who did you play with?
2) What book did Mrs. X read?
3) What happened at circle time?
4) Did you play outside? What did you play?
5) How was your snack (whatever it was)? What did Max (made up name) have for snack?
6) Did you paint? Draw any pictures?

As DD gives me more info each day, I can ask more detailed questions!

DD#1 never tells me anything...I grilled her about kindergarten the other day and she turned to me and said, "mom, please stop asking me questions"...

DD#2 (who is in nursery school) on the other hand will tell me EVERYTHING without even being asked.

depends on the kid.

with DD#1 things have improved over time and asking specific question does help a bit - instead of "what did you do today?" i ask "did you have gym?"

ITA with PP...depends on the kid.

My older one is like pulling teeth, in PK and now in elementary school

My current PKer tells me a lot.

What Did You Do Today?

When children come home

At the end of the day,

There’s a question they’re asked

As they scurry to play.

"Tell me, what did you do in school today?"

"Nothing. I did nothing today!"

Perhaps nothing means that I played with blocks.

Tied my own shoes, or found beautiful rocks.

Maybe our monarchs hatched today,

Or maybe I found a new friend to play.

Maybe today was the very first time

My scissors followed a very straight line.

I learned a new song, and sang all the words,

Or I touched a feather from the strangest of birds.

When you’re only four and your heart has wings,

"Nothing" can mean some wonderful things!

some days i get alot of info from her and others not much..but then randomly she will tell me things in her own time.

I have to ask specific questions if I want specific answers...

What was your project today?

Who did you play with at the playground?

What was your snack?

What story did your teacher read to you?

Who did you play with in the classroom?

But...it does produce answers so I don't mind!

I always get the "Nothing".
I usually answer back with "Nothing, aww come on xyz, you had to have done something".

I get a pause and then the "I Played".

I do ask more specifics on the car ride home or during lunch when he's home for lunch.

Troy does the same thing (and did when he was in daycare, since about 3 yrs old).

I have learned to ask the questions the "right" way to get answers.

"Did you do music or gym today?"

"What did you color?"

I at least get his mind going and he will answer and share more.

I get the “Nothing” every day. I let her rest and unwind for a bit and then ask her specific details.

For DD it depends on the day. Sometimes I'll get a lot of info and some days not so much. I find the more specific the question the more info I'll get. If I just ask her what she did, I usually get nothing. So now I ask her what books did you read, who did you play with etc.

lol..it's like vegas..what happens in pre-k stays in prek...my DC is so secretive about her day..even when I ask specifics..the weird thing is that

AHHHH I TOTALLY GET THIS!!!... Cadence comes home and says i did nothing and played with nobody... it drives me crazy

I always say to my DS how was school today and he replies with great...(fill in with whatever was most exciting for him-for example yesterday he told me the high school kids came to read to the preschoolers). Then I ask specific questions-who did you play with, what did you have for snack. He does a combo of answering my questions and telling me on his own about his day.
