Pre-School question again.

I know I am obsessed, but with another LO on the way I actually want to get the school visits for Gs pre-school out of the way sooner rather than later. Right now he is in a program that he enjoys, but he is already showing signs of outgrowing their curriculum.

So we are looking at three schools. One of them is the Waldorf school in Garden City. We like their philosophy in general, but they have a "no media" request that they apaprently try to enforce. This means no media of any kind for the children that attend their school.

Not only do I think it is unrealistic, but I work in magazine publishing! It would be hypocritical of me to send him there no?

Why is this so hard...seriously..its not college?Chat Icon

What does "no media" mean? You can not own a TV or have one on while the child is in the house? No magazines? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is what it sounds like. No videos or anything.

Here is the policy from their website:

"SCHOOL MEDIA POLICY

The Waldorf School of Garden City is dedicated to nurturing the children’s capacities for imagination, healthy emotional development, independent thinking and positive action. In recognizing the harmful effects that media have on the development of these capacities we ask that parents modify their children’s media exposure to comply with the requirements outlined below:

The early childhood and grade 1-5 teachers request that parents eliminate media from the lives of their children. As need be, the teachers will assist by providing recommendations about how to carry this out.
For our purposes media are considered to include:

Television
Radio, walkmen, discmen, mp3 players
Movies
Video and electronic games
Computers"

And they will frown upon your child associating with children who have televisions, read magazines, play with tv show spinoff toys...etc etc?

Its unrealistic. They can't enforce that...

Wow -- I just can't imagine. Does that mean no books too?!?!? As a librarian, I would have a serious problem with that. Sometimes I think my DD does watch too much TV, but to say no media at all seems a bit much to me. I haven't begun the pre-school search yet, but now I'm scared. Chat Icon

That's tough when the Waldorf school wants you to really abide by it. I didn't research Waldorf a ton but I know a friend out here who's DD goes to a home based Waldorf preschool but she gets some "media" time.
