Preggo Crashing....Breastfeeding Question?

How do you know if they ate enough? or how much they ate? I once saw on the baby story that after a feeding the mother weighed her child to see if the scale went up...is this true?

I never did anything like that!! In the beginning the doctors have you keep track of their wet and dirty diapers! They should so many wet diapers a day and thats a good indicator! The doctor also goes by their weight checks!

I agree with the previous post. Your baby will stop eating when they are full. If they eat too much, they will probably spit up a little bit, but as long as they are gaining weight and are peeing and pooping regularly you have nothing to worry about. You can pump into bottles to measure about what you are producing if you are interested in a number.

Re: Preggo Crashing....Breastfeeding Question?

My DS will usually just start sucking to soothe when he's full and not swallow, thats my first indication that he's done. I'll then take him off my breast and if he's not rooting or eating his hands anymore and just sitting comfortably, I know he's finished.
Unfortunately, with BF there is no way to know how many ounces exactly DC is getting unless you pump. Your body will adjust its milk supply to the needs of your child. That's why you should try to avoid supplementing with formula if possible. If DC has wet and poopy diapers regularly and is gaining well, you know he's eating enough. HTH!!

BFing is the easiest and hardest thing you'll ever do. But I would trust your instincts - you'll just know and your baby will just know too! When your baby is full, he'll stop eating. If he's hungry, HE"LL LET YOU KNOW! My ped had me come in when he was 1 week old and again at 2 weeks old to make sure DS's weight gain was good and it was, so I was confident that everything was okay.

Sometimes in the beginning, nursing would take an hour total - it's normal for that to be the case. For some, it's shorter and that's normal too. I would definitely not stress about it and just trust mother nature. If there's a major problem, you'll know. Best of luck to you!

At first the amount of wet and dirty diapers is what will help you judge. Also, you will have a ped appt soon after baby comes home and then again 1-2 wks later for a weight check
