I was told diet drinks were okay in moderation as long as they don't use saccharine(sp) as a sweetener. Thank goodness for Diet Gingerale.

I don't think it's the caffeine that's troublesome--it's the aspartame. My DH "forbid" Chat Icon me from drinking diet soda, but I did occasionally when he wasn't around.

Don't they all use artificial sweetner if they are diet? Chat Icon

I stopped drinking diet when I got preggo last time, and I never got back into it.

caffeine free- good
diet - bad
You shouldn't have too much of the artificial sweetener.

Which is still artificial.

I would probably avoid it since there are conflicting studies about artificial sweetners during pregnancy and in children/adults.

I used to drink Diet Coke for breakfast & go through the 2 liter bottles in a day & a half. The month before we decided to TTC, I went cold turkey on it because of the asparteme.

Never went back to it, I drink water now.

Re: pregnancy and diet soda?

They now make diet soda with Splenda. My doctor told me I could have that in moderation.

Re: pregnancy and diet soda?

I had GD & my doctor said that I could use anything (in moderation) that contained Splenda, nothing else, since she said Splenda was a natural sugar substitute. That meant I could drink Coke Zero, Pepsi One, etc.

I didn't drink any diet soda during pregnancy.
I'd have a glass of Sprite with dinner, sometimes, but mostly stuck with water.

Re: pregnancy and diet soda?

I realize because I no longer drink it, this is preachy.

I completely agree with Donna/dm24angel from another post when she said the ones that respond 'we had <insert any crap food, immunization, formula, etc> & we're fine'...we don't know that we are fine. It's something you find out later. I don't know that my guzzling only diet coke for over 15 years didn't ruin my bones. All I do know is I wasn't drinking milk, eating things with calcium as I should have.

Every study has shown that sodas (colas, in particular) sap your body of calcium & cause a loss of bone density.

While going through gallons of diet coke, I never considered it in my 20s or my early 30s. The only time I considered it was when I decided to have a baby. I thought "well if it saps my bones of calcium, why would I want to ingest it if I'm trying to grow little bones too."

Now that I'm pushing 40...ok really pushing 40, I've considered bone density more as I hear more about my parents' friends having problems. New studies are showing teens have osteoporosis.

Everyone can debate studies all they want that soda does/does not cause it. What is a fact is by drinking soda, you're not drinking the healthier alternative.

When my kids were babies, the pediatrician told me not to give them anything but formula or breast milk. Every ounce they took in as infants were supposed to be good for them. I don't know why I stopped it when they were toddlers but I did. Equally as important is that I, as an adult, should also take the advice too. If anything, to give me a better shot at being there when my kids get older.

So my long-winded answer is skip it. Drink water, drink milk, drink juice. Chat Icon

Re: pregnancy and diet soda?

I would skip it...when you read about how a diet soda can clean a rusty nail in minutes it makes you wonder what it could do to your insides never mind your little ones...I drank soda water and a splash of cranberry during my pregnancy and while BF....sucks but hey its only a small sacrafice in the grand scheme of things.Chat Icon
