prek through school district and cut off date? ?
Is there a way to fight the cut off date? If I feel my child who was born slightly after is ready for prek next year?

I don't think so. They have a cut off date for a reason. If they been it for you, they have to bend it for everyone. I have friends who were born December 3 (cutoff is December 1) and they were held back the year because they missed the cut off. If you feel your DC is ready for Pre-K, find a private pre-K they can go to.

Not through the district. My friend enrolled her son in a private PreK and K bc he was 3 days after the cut off. It was the only way around it. Even if you did a private PreK they wouldn't let you enroll in K through district earlier than cut off.

Yes, I was going to say this.... so in essence if you did that, he'd have to do Pre-K or a Pre K program 2 years in a row, kwim?

My DS misses the cut off. He will being doing Pre K at his daycare and then K in a catholic school. He is ready for it and I don't want to hold him back because of an arbitrary date set by the district.
Once a year of K is completed then the public school has to take them no matter when their Bday is.

This - the only way to do it is to enroll in an accredited private kindergarten program as well. I know some who have done this and it has worked for them.
Our local catholic school has started to adhere to the same cut off as the public school because of high enrollment (they have full day k while the public school does not).

I don't think so.
That said, different districts have different cutoffs. NYC has a 12/31 cutoff, while my home district has a 12/1.

What you might be able to do is enroll your dc in a private school for kindergarten. Then next year register for first grade. You should also contact your school district to see if they offer testing to allow a child born close to the cut off to enroll. I know one family who was able to do it for a child born the day of the cutoff.

I tried and wasn't able to. My son was born on 12/9 and the cutoff for our district is 12/1. He has always been advanced, but I'd much rather him be the oldest than the youngest in the grade.

In our district you can definitely do it in first after completing private K - they are still tested though to make sure they are at the level. I have heard of kids being able to do it in K based on testing but it's hearsay and I don't know for sure. I would ask to meet with principal or ap and ask - doesn't hurt.

That is good to know about Private Kindergarten & 1st. I am due Dec 3rd, and was thinking about this since the cutoff is Dec 1st in my district. Why they don't make the cutoff Jan 1st, the New Year, is so odd to me. I am going to really consider doing private school for K so he/she can be in 1st with kids born in the same year if he/she is ready. I thought I was going to just have to wait a whole year.

Not with the school district. My twins were born on December 2nd. 1 day after the cutoff and we tried to fight it but was unsuccessful. They could have done a 3 year old preschool program this year at our school and a 4 year old pre k program next year. Only one of my twins was picked for the lotto so we opted to do a program at the church and they strictly follow the school guidelines for age. They are the oldest kids in their class along with 1 other child who is December 3rd. Most of their classmates are just turning 4 now. They'll do pre k next year and then go to kindergarten.

December 1st is actually a late cutoff compared to most of the country. Many states do it as early as 9/1 with no way around it even (not even private school).
I wish there was a consistent cut off across the country.

This. We moved OOS to a state where the cut-off is 9/1. My son missed the cut off and so had to do another year of pre-k (would have been in K in NY). Best thing ever!!!!! He's not even the oldest is his class. 1/2 of his class has birthdays before him. He has flourished and I am forever glad that he didn't start K. My youngest is 5 days before our cut-off and I have already decided to hold him back, even though he's 1. No reason for him to be the youngest, possibly even by 1 entire year. I see the differences between my 5 year old and his friends in the same grade who are much younger bc they made the cutoff and it reinforces my decision with my little guy even more.
Be thankful your child doesn't make the cutoff bc quite frankly our educational system is asking more off children than they are developmentall ready for at these young ages. That extra year will benefit him/her quite a bit. As for the articles that often state that holding children back is detrimental, these assume that the children have not attended school prior to K. I believe in sending my kids to nursery/preschool for ages 3 and 4 so they have plenty of exposure. Just my opinion.
