Prenatal Medical Coverage
I have Empre BC/BS and under prenatal care I am 100% covered (incl sonos, bloodwork, etc.). I just received a bill for $362 to be paid to a lab that recently did my bloodwork. The ins co said my dr. sent my blood to an out of network provider (this specific lab). I am very confused-isn't it protocol to send a patient's blood to their network's lab? And shouldn't I have been notified that my blood was being sent to an out of network lab? Do doctors only have one lab they send their bloodwork to? If this was my dr's fault can I hold them responsible? Almost 400 dollars for bloodwork is ridiculous! And I am not shelling that kind of money out everytime I have an appt.
Anybody??

I work for a doctors office and the lab should have your blood work processed at a lab that is covered by your insurance..it is their responsibility to send it out to the correct establishment i would call the lab and complain..jmo

That's what I thought. I couldn't imagine having to pay $400 every time I have blood drawn while preggo. I am sure they have a lab associated with them that's in Empire's network. I am really ****** about this mistake and I hope the dr's office will rectify the situation. I am calling first thing in the morning.
Thanks so much!

Re: Prenatal Medical Coverage
The long and short of it is that your doctor should have sent your blood out to a lab that was in your plan. Everytime i have blood drawn at the doctor's office they ask me who my insurance company is to make sure they send it to the right place. However, I believe that when it comes down to it, it is not the doctor's responsiblity to make sure it goes to the correct lab (I've seen signs in several offices). That being said, it wouldnt stop me from bringing them the bill and pitching a fit about it.
