Preschool for next year
I posted last week that my daughter did not get into the UPK program for the district. SHe did the 3 year old program this year but her name didn't get pulled for next year. She's on the wait list, but there are about 30 kids ahead of her. The office lady told me to "make other plans."
Here is my challenge: We can't afford to make other plans. We are living paycheck to paycheck, my unemployment is about to cut off, and there are NO jobs out there for teachers. There is nothing left to cut out of our budget.
But at the same time, how do I not send her to preK? I guess I could put her inother free stuff (things at the library, playgroups, etc) for socialization, and then do the preschool workbooks at home, but I don't know.
How horrible would it be if she didn't go to preschool?

Re: Preschool for next year
Not sure where you live, but I saved this article from last year from my local newspaper.... The Childcare Program at the Eastern Suffolk Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) Islip Career Center in Oakdale offers a pre-k program 8am-10am or 11:30-1:30pm Tues and Thurs for $175 per YEAR !
Kids ages 3-5 and toilet trained 244-5900 and 244-5916
Maybe you can try that

Re: Preschool for next year
I looked all over the BOCES website for something like this and didn't find anything! Thanks so much for the info.

Your welcome
I cut out the article and stuck it in my address book because it seems like such a great deal and hoped someone could benefit from it one day !

I don't think its horrible for her academic future, just a whole lot more work for you to keep her entertained!
Have you looked into jobs at daycare centers with pre-k programs? Maybe you can get a job for you and school for her in a package.

This sounds like an idea, I'm sure the pay is less than you would earn as a teacher, but if she could go to the daycare, she would get the preK experience.
I don't think it is bad for her not to go to prek, but I agree, it is more work for you to find free or low cost programs for her and set up playdates as well as some basic instruction in certain areas.
