Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
TJ is a gassy little dude. WAY gassier than my other 2. We are currently being treated for thrush and I read on Kellymom that thrush can cause gassiness (due to yeast overgrowth in the gut).
I'm going to contact my ped and my LC, but wondering who here gives probiotics to their LOs and did you start when they were NB? How do I give a probiotic- and what kind?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
I did give KJ some for awhile, the brand was biogaia (or something like that) and it was 40 bucks for a tiny bottle
seemed to help, I would drop it into his bottle...not sure how to get it into them if they do not take bottles though

I'm typing from my phone. We started Alexa on Pro-biotics at a few days old. Do a search for my name and pro-biotics. You should get a lot of info, if not FM me

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
biogaia was recommended by our ped for gas, I can't tell if it alone helped we did about a million things
it comes in a dropper I just squeezed his cheeks to make a "funny fish face" and dropped it in. I used to say "make a fishy face!" each time.
He knows it so well now, he's prepared for fish face means he's getting something dropped, makes it tons easy to drop in meds

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
I used them for DS for about 2 months. They did seem to work. I use to just open Ds mouth and let the drops fall in. I can't remember the exact dosage maybe 3-5 drops. The ones we used we had to order from the pharmacy bc it wasn't something they stocked. The bottle was like $40, but my ped gave me $5 off mail in rebates.
Here is the pic for the one we sued.

We used this one for DS but not when he was a newborn. Got it at Whole Foods. I wish I had known about probiotics sooner. DS was colicky and I am sure this would have helped! I mixed it with BM.

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
Ladies, thank you ALL for your help!!! I'm hoping that this helps my little guy.
Did you all notice a decrease in the amount of gas? How about a change in poops? TJ has been farting like CRAZY literally since birth. We joked about it in the hospital. He also seems to struggle when he poops, which is not something I thought BFed babies did. LOTS of grunting when he poops, sometimes crying out.
His poops are typical BF poops (yellow, seedy), but not as often as I remember with my girls. He'll have wet toots all day, but only have 2-4 huge poops a day. I remember my girls pooping at just about every feeding.
Anyway, thanks for the help and taking the time to respond!

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
i BF'd and took strong ones myself that i think my ped. said would get into my DS through the BFing, then when he was bottle fed i put the powder in. i 100% believe they helped and IF i ever have another child i will start them from the beginning like i did with DS but not with DD. ETA as a BF'd baby (for 7 months) he pretty much pooped every time he fed without issue.

Alexas belly was so distended from the gas it was HORRENDOUS. 3 days on pro-biotics and I swear she farted it all out. Made pooping so much better. We never had gas issues as long as she was on pro-bitoics. I also took them since I was nursing.

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
I use Udo's Choice for my LO, which is a powder. It's a non-dairy, which I need because DS had a milk allergy. It's tough to give it to him every day because I don't give him bottles, so I have to rub some on my nipples before feeding him or put it on his pacifier.

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
i haven't given it when NB, but we use Primadophilus for Children. It got very good reviews in Kiwi magazine (it was parent's choice last year), online, and some other places i looked for reviews

Re: Probiotics for a BFing newborn....
maria helped us with this!
we used the Udo brand also... it's a powder. we mixed it in a syringe with some breastmilk and then just gave it to loey like a medicine - kwim?
once we started solids, we mixed it in with that.
like maria said, loey basically farted MORE on it... but in a good way! he got all his gas out and then started pooping more consistently also. he stopped having painful gas.
