BFing and gas in newborn
I'm having a hard time with food choices since the baby is born. It seems like almost everything I eat is creating gas in my DS!!! I feel terrible for putting him through this, and I hate giving him mylicon all the time.
I know to avoid the obvious: broccoli, onions, tomato sauce, garlic. What other foods create gas in newborns?
Also, would probiotics help? DS was on IV antibiotics for 24 hours after he was born as a precautionary measure, and I think it may have messed up the natural bacteria in his intestines. Would BRU carry them or only a health food store? Any help would be great appreciated!

BM has natural probiotics, I wouldn't bother with buying them if you are EBF. If you added formula thats another story, formula can kill the natural good bacteria. We use BioGaia and saw significant results in 2 weeks. You can ask pharmacy to order it.
oh so you are giving mylicon, if you want to try something else, try gripe water?
something else my ped recommended is chamomile tea, call and find out if that is okay for your lo.
Also, we love this: Baby Yoga for Gas

I'm EBFing, but because he was in the NICU for 48hrs in the hospital for low glucose they supplemented with formula and he was on IV antibiotics, which I'm sure killed the beneficial bacteria.

Re: BFing and gas in newborn
He's young - I know a lot of newborns are just gassy because of their immature digestive systems. I know my DD was. Mylicon helped a bit but really I just had to wait for her to grow out of it.
A lot of people swear by gripe water, I never used it, but it can't hurt

Re: BFing and gas in newborn
i would try the probiotics
i also EBF (but did use formula for a little while because of jaundice & lazy BFnig in the beginning few weeks)
loey has always been VERY gassy... and we just found out about probiotics very recently and tried and have seen a huge difference!
mylicon and gripe water did NOTHING for him, but the probiotics really help.
he's pooping more often and seems able to get his gas out better when he does have gas, although we definitely are noticing less gas. he's even sleeping better because he's not so gassy at night! it's been a lifesaver.
i didn't speak to my ped. first about it, but please do so if you want

Re: BFing and gas in newborn
My DS is very gassy too. I actually cut out milk and milk products when he was about 3 wks old and saw a big difference. He still farts like a MAN, but is clearly not in pain. I am just starting (at 13 wks) to reintroduce these things. I also give him probiotics (BioGaia, which is cheaper from the website than at the pharmacy), and think that it helps him poop. I, like you, did not want to be giving him mylicon all the time. I give him gripe water when he seems gassy now, too. If you are BFing and have a hard time getting the gripe water in, use a bottle nipple...get him to suck and then just put the liquid right in it. My doc said that green leafy veggies can cause gas, as well.

Re: BFing and gas in newborn
I am also EBF. I find that some fruit juices, garlic, and spicy foods make DS very gassy. I use Mylicon also but mostly I stick with bicycle kicks and baby yoga for gas (looked it up on Youtube). Good luck!
