Property Assessment Question

Today in the mail, I got a letter from the Nassau County Department of Assessment. I filed a tax appeal last year, but hadn't heard anything back from them. The letter that I received today shows that for the 2016/17 tax year, my full market value decreased as did my tentative assessed value. Does this mean that my appeal was accepted and my taxes will be lower than in years past? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm still a new homeowner and not sure how all this works! Thanks!

I like your question, although I can't answer it Chat Icon I received the same letter too and the assessment is the EXACT same number as last year and I wondered if that meant my taxes would be the same as the previous year...new homeowner here too...hope someone responds to your question, it would help clarify my thoughts too

I got that letter too, mine seems to have had no change in assessment from the prior year but the letter said if you want to challenge it you have until March, I believe, to file an appeal. I don't think it necessarily means your taxes will go down/stay the same. Taxes can go up but if you have a lower assessment then your neighbor, then your neighbor will be paying more.

Property Assessment Question

We don't own but we are looking and we went into mynassauproperty.com for 2 houses we are thinking about. The full tax info is on that site with all the taxes for the current year as well as prior so you can try looking up your house and seeing if there was a change to this years taxes vs. your taxes from last year.

Re: Property Assessment Question

It doesn't necessarily mean your appeal for 2015/16 was accepted or rejected. It just means that your 2016/17 tax bills will be based upon the new reduced assessment. As far as whether or not your taxes will be lower, it's impossible to answer. Taxes are calculated by multiplying assessment X tax rate. Tax rates change every year (usually increasing). By reducing your assessment you reduce your exposure but not necessarily the amount you pay in taxes.
