PSA: A warning about photo stamps - not sure if this was posted already

Child photo stamps warning from Ct Attorney General By George Gombossy on January 26, 2009 3:21 PM
Press release:
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today, prompted by parent concerns, issued a warning to consumers about placing their child's photo on U.S. postage stamps for use in daily mailing.
Blumenthal said a picture of a child on a postage stamp -- together with the return address on the envelope -- may serve as a road map for predators seeking to harm children or their families.
The U.S. Postal Service now offers to personalize stamps with a child's photo, or other personal photographs.
In a letter to Postmaster General John E. Potter, Blumenthal urged that he consult with criminal justice experts to examine whether photos of children on stamps -- and other personal photos -- increase the risk of crimes against children.
Blumenthal said, "The message to parents is: commons sense calls for caution. Some dangers may be unknown or unknowable. I applaud the postal service's creativity -- and its goal of raising revenue -- but it may be unwittingly raising risks to children as well.
"A child's picture on a postage stamp, coupled with the return address on the envelope, provides a tempting target and critical information to predators.
"Some personalized stamps could turn postage into predator roadmaps -- a vivid living color invitation -- particularly when used for everyday non-personal mailing such as bills and other routine business.
"At banks or offices where your mail arrives -- or even after it is discarded by recipients -- this photo and address may be easily accessible to someone capable of harm. Parents deserve warning of the risks possibly resulting from using stamps showing photos of their children."
More than 30 million PhotoStamps have reportedly been sold.

Honestly - I think this makes perfect sense when you think about it -
Is it REALLY necessary to put your child's face on a postage stamp?
Would you put your SS# on a postage stamp??

I agree-as soon as I saw the title I had a feeling it was going to be this. I never thought about it before, but when you do-it's so true.
It's crazy that this is what the world have come to, but better to be aware than not.

This is exactly the reason why I have never done this - way too many nut jobs out there.

I mean my return address is a PO box, and I never put our last name on our return address (b/c Dh has a different last name than I), but I could not believe that the thought never crossed my mind!

Re: PSA: A warning about photo stamps - not sure if this was posted already
Okay, seriously though.
Someone would have to have access to the post office and sift through hundreds of thousands of letters looking for a stamp with a picture of your kid on them.
Or they would have to go through all their neighbors' mail on the off chance that maybe someone sent them a letter with a photostamp?
That seems pretty unlikely to me.

This is why I have never used them for DD. I am so paranoid - I will not use her own address labels and I will never use those photo postcards that some people use for thank yous.
You never know who is getting their hands on these things

I think it's unlikely but we're not great about shredding our mail. Good PSA but I'd never do a photostamp of my kids. I prefer getting the comic book ones for Joseph's invites or the old fashioned toy ones for Maddie's.

ITA. Unless you have an attached garage, limo-tinted windows, and never EVER have your DC out in the daylight, anybody driving by will see your DC in your yard. They now have your address, and they are already local.... that's a more imminent threat than a photo on an envelope, IMO. if we're going to eliminate threats, we have to live in a cage ourselves.....

I've been trying of a way to say the same thing all day....
I understand the warning, but soon it is going to be suggested that people cover their kids up like freakaziod Michael Jackson does
