PSA about using travel websites to book a hotel
DH uses Travelocity exclusively when we book trips. this past weekend we stayed at a Wingate Inn in the Atlanta area and when we checked out, we inadvertently found out that we could have saved $20 by booking with them directly! the per night rate using Travelocity was $63 a night and their rate was only $53 a night
just wanted to share - do your research!

Re: PSA about using travel websites to book a hotel
I found this out the hard way also. I booked my airline tickets to Europe this April on cheaptickets.com. I thought I was getting a good deal. Turns out I went on AA.com and found out that I was charged not only a $50 charge but also the same tickets, same flight was $230 cheapter through AA's website. I called AA and asked to get a reimbursement and after 1 month of arguing with them (even though I had no argument) I received the $230 reimbursement on my amex. Which goes to show you that non-refundable doesn't mean non-workable.
Next time I will book through the hotel and airline directly unless those travel sites are offering a crazy deal.

Re: PSA about using travel websites to book a hotel
wow, sorry !
it can go either way though.
I just booked my HM to Italy using hotels.com
I called the airlines and the hotels directly first, and they all referred me to their websites, because the internet rates are better than their phone rates...
I then compared those direct rates to a hotels.com "travel package" - flight, airport transfers, AND hotels, and the package rate was $200 cheaper per person - $400 for the couple! And that included a better class room at one of the hotels, too. (direct rate superior room was more expensive than package "superior with view" room)
After booking through hotels.com, I emailed the hotels directly just to make sure everything went through ok - i explained that I'm just covering my bases because its our HM, etc....and one of the hotels GAVE US the romance package for free! Free bathrobes (to keep!), slippers, spumante, roses and chocolates.
I couldn't be happier with hotels.com right now

I find that all the time with Expedia. When I check through the hotel and airline websites, they are almost always cheaper.

Yeah I had the same experience, but with expedia. I checked airlines directly, and then checked other travel sites, but found the cheapest on expedia. I guess you just have to do as much research as you can.

Re: PSA about using travel websites to book a hotel
The only web site that has given me GREAT deals has been priceline.com
But, that is only if I know what area I want to be in, and am willing to take a gamble!
