Re: PSA for NON dog owners
If it is happy hour I go home and let my children out and then lock them back up in their crates after they finish peeing. Then I go and party hardy.
I DO give them a couple of treats.. a marshmallow or a Zagnut bar sometimes.. so it's not like I am a BAD mom.
Isn't this the norm?

First of all- Brutus = I would LOVE a vacation with Busey!!!! the guilt I feel when we go away is rediculous. I had my sister house sit for us while we were in hawaii- because I couldn't handle the thought of her being in a kennel!
FMIL is going to watch him for us. . . but even when we went away for a long weekend - when we got back she told us that she had to HAND FEED him his food. . . he only ate little bites here and there so she finally gave in and made him a hamburger ( he is so manipulative!) but he never left FH's room ONCE. . . she didnt want to tell us while we were away - i am going to be SO SAD being away from him for a full week!
the guilt is nuts - i never knew i would feel this way!
ETA: we are staying in these awesome pet friendly cottages in Key West that have dog walks and stuff. Also, there are dog beaches in the area and dog parks - dogs are even allowed in the outdoor restaurants and given their own bowls!!!!

ITA! I could have never said it better myself.
People really don't get what it's like to have a pup at home. Sometimes when I get lip from coworkers about going out after work I say "How would you like it if you had to hold your pee in for 9 hours"

This is why I don't have a dog. Because as much as I would love to have one,I am a nasty stay out!!!
And I am not that heartless to neglect a pup!!

WHY should an animal be treated differently than a human??
People wouldn't do that to their kids and I would never do that to my dog... I love her more than a lot of things in this world! Image Attachment(s):

some people will just never get it.
My honeymoon to St Lucia is going to be for seven nights - then we are planning a big three week first anniversary to Key West - and we are getting a small house so that I can bring Brutus - I am more excited about THAT vacation! EVeryone thinks I am nuts for that.
It hurts to know that for the week I am gone, even though he will be well taken care of- he probably won't eat or drink properly and never really leave his bed its not like i am canceling my HM or anything - just going for a week instead of two and then planning something for later!
I agree!!!
The only thing I am NOT looking forward to about our HM is being away from Char.
I wanted to bring her to DC with us this July and everyone at me... I was like whatever! Kiss it!!!

Please stop rolling your eyes when I decline a Happy Hour invite. My dog is locked up alone from 7:30AM to 6PM. She is my baby. I am not able to go out after work, for anything- let alone to go out drinking, while neglecing my dog and her bladder. And I can NOT go home, let her out, then lock her back up. Because that is just cruel. I love this creature. And she needs attention. I would never roll my eyes about you needing to pick up your child from somewhere. It's a responsibility, sorry.
I hate when people tell me I spoil my dogs - why b/c I actually pay attention to them????????

Good for you! I understand so much. People think you can just take the dog out and then put it back, lock it up in a crate, etc. NOT.
If you care about your dogs, you dont do that. They miss you and need company and you cant tease them like that....
You are a good puppy mama! Kudos to those who treat their pets well, and dont give a damm what others say!

See our concern with taking our pets away is...
we are afraid of leaving t hem in the rooms alone b.c we are afraid someone might see them out with us and break in and steal them (like what happened to that little British girl).
So I couldnt even relax while away. Or I would be afraid they would tear up the room or that a housekeeper would accidentally come in and let them out and they would get lost.
So for us, taking them away isnt an option in our minds.
hmm i never thought about a "dognapping" that IS something to consider. but honestly - we wouldnt really be away from him that long each day - since most of the restaurants are pet friendly and the bars usually have a bar right off the street where you can get drinks and walk around. so really, we would only be leaving him for a few hours each day if we wanted to go to do something more "touristy"
and as for tearing stuff up and damaging items - he has never destoryed anything besides his own toys and bed - but you are right, in a different environment - who knows?
as for getting let out - we can request NOT having housekeeping - yes more work for me but worth it for the peace of mind.
all great points - and we have never been away with him but i think in the end it will all work out. . . if we can make it 24+ hours in the car with him farting the whole way - the rest of the vacation will be a breeze!

I am the same way with my two little ones. I've passed up more happy hour invites than I can count because of them. I would not do that to my babies...

You're hysterical on LIW and hysterical here!!!!!!!!!
I used to love it when my summer housemates would tell me that I am babying my dog or that I don't need to watch him too closely. These were the same people whose dogs peed on the house curtains, drank mixed drinks out of cups that were left out and ate full sized bags of doritos that people left out. My dog would be puking all night if I let that go on. Oh--one of their dogs ate Silly String, too. Then I found one of their dogs wandering the beach and no one realized he was missing. My dog is no angel, but at least I do some damage control!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: PSA for NON dog owners
Just a suggestion, but if you're getting crap for going to take care of your dogs then just don't tell your friends / co-workers why you're turning down the invite.
You're not required to give a reason - just say "Thanks - I wish I could but I have a prior commitment" and leave it at that. They don't need to know what it is.
If you're constantly turning down invites you're giving them the message that your dog is more important than them. Not that you should be neglecting your dog, but if you value your friendships then perhaps you should counter with another suggestion, ie: I can't tonight, but let's get together for lunch next Saturday.

Re: PSA for NON dog owners
Lauren - I was raised with dogs, and only have a cat because I rent and couldn't ever find homes that would accept dogs, but I tell people that dogs are like babies - but for their entire lives. They need to be cared for like children... I totally agree with you - why have a dog if you are going to not be home for him/her?
You take care of your doggy!!!!

[I wanted to bring her to DC with us this July and everyone at me... I was like whatever! Kiss it!!!
Just be careful if you do, about boarding on a plane. Thats partly why I dont travel much anymore, we feel terrible about leaving our pups (and thats with my mom who loves them alot!)
I worry about them so much I almost cant have a good time while away.
We have a little "carry on" crate that she can go in and actually come ON board with us... I looked into it! We found a pet-friendly Hotel that even has a dog bowl in it and daily activities you can schedule for if you don't want to take her that day. DC happens to be one of the most "dog friendly" cities in the Country!
But my friend Joe gave me this "carry on" crate thing and he said that he takes his dog, Roxy, all time time on the plane with it-- it normally costs like 75 bucks through the airline, you need to be a certain weight or less to qualify but as long as you have the "correct" crate then you don't need to pay for it so he gave me one of his!
Since she only weighs 12 pounds we are good to go! Still not sure if we are going to take her or not but we made all the arrangements for if we change our mind.
I guess it depends on the size and weight of your pups?
I would NEVER in a million years put her on the plane in the cargo hull where they put larger animals-- NEVER EVER EVER EVER
