PSA: Kids, dogs and food
We had a scary incident this past weekend and I wanted to take the opportunity to remind eveyone (especially those with dogs!) about how some people food can be dangerous to the dogs.
Onion, garlic, grapes and Rasins can all be toxic to dogs. Raisins are the worst because even though they are dried grapes, the concentration in each one is worse.
We were at our friends house for Halloween and the dog got quiet (usually means he is in trouble somewhere). I went to check and make sure that he didn't take the girls toys to chew on.
I found him under the living room table eating something. When I turned on the light, I found out that he had pulled my pocketbook off of the chair, opened it, found a snack pack of raisins that I keep as a snack for the girls and ate the WHOLE thing, including some of the actual carton.
Fortunately, one of our good friends is a vet and we called her right away. She told us to try and make the dog vomit (which didn't work) and he ended up at the emergency vet at 10 Sunday night. They got him to vomit there and he is under observation and on an I.V. for 48 hours to see if he goes into toxic shock.
My friend, whose dog it is, had absolutely no idea that raisins are even bad for the dog. I am sure that there are many others who aren't aware and I wanted to spread the word - especially since if your kids are like mine, they feed the dog their food way too much
As few as 7 grapes can be toxic and as few as 9 grapes have lead to the death of a dog.
