PSA: Regarding Sippy Cups and tooth decay....Thoughts?
There was a parenting insert in the sunday paper and a small article said the following:
In 2006 the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry put out information that letting a child "graze" with a sippy cup with anything BUT water will increase their chances of tooth decay.
Apparently, letting them walk around and "sip" from a sippy cup all day with watered down juice or milk is NOT good. Meal time is OK because the amount they drink and what they drink can be monitored.
It stated that too many parents use the sippy for convenience because they don't spill and that the sippy is merely a training tool to transition to a real cup.
BUT it did not state an age range for trying for that real cup.....

I saw this in Parenting this morning. My mom told me the same thing. Because when my sister was younger, her teeth rotted from sipping out of the sippy cup all day. The milk or juice pools in the kid's mouth and causes the teeth to rot.

I agree with their statement. Many people don't use it as a training tool as much as a spill proof cup.
I would say by 15 months, you should start transitioning to a regular cup.
We had 2 types of sippy cups. One where they had to suck on it & one that was a cup with a top. Once they got used to the first sippy cup, we moved on to the one that wasn's spil proof . They got the concept that they take in too much water if they tipped up to high & can get soaked. Sometimes they wound up with water all over their face.

This happened to my niece. My sister thought she was doing a good thing by giving her access to beverage all day and she ended up with rotten teeth. It's not the cup that is bad, it's the "grazing."

I am learning that the hard way. DS is a big sippy cup lover. And I am totally guilty of using it for convenience. he now has cavities on his two front teeth and now the only thing he gets from the sippy cup is water.

Exactly I have patients that sip sugary drinks all day and are loaded with cavities. The juice is ok with meals, the rest of the grazing should be done with water.

Re: PSA: Regarding Sippy Cups and tooth decay....Thoughts?
My aunt, who is a speech pathologist who works in early intervention, has always told me that sippy cups cause dental problems for kids who use them too much with juice/milk. She recommends a straw cup, which is what we use. A straw cup is better because children only get the liquid in the cup when they are actively sucking on the straw (or something like that). Anyway, we used a straw cup for DS, use one for DD, and have never had a problem.
