PSA: Your company's IT guy/girl is not
your personal IT Tech.
Believe it or not, we actually get paid to know the stuff we know and fix the problems we fix.
So when someone expects you to fix their problems with their home computer for free, it's a little insulting, and frankly, shouldn't be done on company time either. I work for the company...not for you.
Just a little vent. That is all.
P.S. Just to clarify - I am more than happy to offer free computer advice (3, 4, 28 times a day) but when you bring in your daughter's laptop from home and pull me aside pretending like you have an actual work related computer problem and ask me to fix it - well, I have a BIG problem with that. I also have a problem with you coming into my office, plopping yourself down and taking up 1/2 hr of my time discussing everything that went wrong when your stupid arse decided to install Vista on your home PC.
Ok. Vent is really over now.

Re: PSA: Your company's IT guy/girl is not
Thank you. I don't know what it is that makes people think because you know about computers, that you are fair game.
I put a stop to that years ago when someone who was never that nice to me brought in her pc without asking. I made sure, in no uncertain terms, that she knew where I stood on it.
I thought you might like these, I posted them in our kitchen at work:

Yes but I traded my IT department free weekends in Manhattan - so I'd say we're square.

Dh deals with this all the time, especially on weekends. His firm calls so freakin' often, on our home phone, that now, when I pick up when he's gone, I know most of them by name

I used to have a really great collection, for every occasion.
I should say that I am constantly providing support to my immediate family, and I want it that way. Nothing worse than fixing someone else's mistake. I've reconfigured everyone's computer from scratch at least once, if not 2 or 3 times.

DH does IT work and gets the family computer questions, I get the math homework questions.
How do your co-workers not see that this is not work related? I think it is part of the challenge of municipal work (you have a govt. job, right?)

Re: PSA: Your company's IT guy/girl is not
I guess I'm lucky- b/c when I asked the it guy at my job a question- he offered to fix my personal computer-
we do eat lunch together everyday and I did return the favor and get him a blender for free
but I would never expect it

When I have a password complainer I give them this.
That's almost exactly our password policy. Except its even more stringent than that.
I had someone complain that we were enforcing a password protected screensaver on all computers (after 15 minutes idle).
I turned to him, in front of everyone in the meeting, and told him that I have to lock my computer every time I get up from my desk in addition to using at least 15 different passwords that don't have words in them (gasp!) on a daily basis so he will get NO sympathy from me.
You know what... If you're not smart enough to remember one password after a weekend has passed, maybe you shouldn't be working for this company.

BTDT with most of these posts! I've trained most people that I don't fix everyone's PC anymore. At work, we can't bring stuff into the building, so I don't have people dropping off PCs in my office, but I do get lots of questions. Most are simple enough, and the people are nice, so I don't mind, but no more manual labor.
I've done the password comment, too. I remind people that for every password they have, I have the same type of user password, and admin-type account password and username, and usually a server-specific username and password. PLUS, I'm involved in almost every system in the company, not the small handful they are in.... that usually shuts them up for a while....
