Public Aware of Salary - Teachers -----> Spinoff Thread

I thought this might be interesting.

I wish you could post more than 1 poll at a time on the thread..basically, I was curious as to your salary (just yours - not your SO's included) and if you wouldn't mind it being able to be publicly accessed for all to see.

You can submit your answer into the poll and then, if you wish, state a simple reply on if you wouldn't mind your salary being public or not (whether its paid for through tax dollars or not).


For the record, I will admit: I would not want *my* salary made public..I wouldn't want it made public even if the public was funding it....no way jose!

I voted and honestly I'm not ashamed about disclosing my salary because I've met people who think " oh you work as a ____, therefore you must make a lot of $$/make hardly any $$". Yet salaries vary widely if you are in the public sector or private sector.

It's just not so cut and dry- there are a lot of factors at play!

I am not a public school teacher, but I am a state employee, so mine is public and available online. I don't mind.

It does cause problems in the office/organization. People at the same level make varying amounts based on a lot of factors, but it's always an issue over who makes more/why, etc.

There was a lot of talk about education on the teacher thread--I have a doctorate (not required for my position), and was not given a salary increase because of the degree. I was given increased based on various degrees of sh!t piled on top of my normal duties.

I could care less if people know what I make. What is the big secret?
I do feel that if your salary is being paid with public money/tax money then the public has the right to know who is making what.

I am a teacher so the salary is public.

However, when people know how much you make they make assumptions so its like oh well so and so makes this much so can't they afford it...

It should be private information.

My salary is public because I am a NYC teacher, but it's really incomplete information. The listings do not show years of experience, education or how many hours of per session a teacher may work in a year.

I am a federal employee and mine is public. You can search by my name and see my salary and bonus history.

I am fine with it.

I'm a SAHM so I won't answer the poll since you don't want household income. But when I was working I wouldn't have wanted my exact salary posted, regardless of if I worked for a public or private organization. One company I worked for classified everyone into different band levels and it was posted which band I was in and what the salary range for the band was. I was comfortable with that.

I'm an licensed engineer and I work for a private company. I've been in my field for more than 15 years and I make decent money (although only PT now). My salary is not public and I would not want it as such. However, if I am working on a government job, I am categorized and my salary is then public.

I work for a private not-for-profit agency. As a result my current salary is @ $25K LOWER than someone in the true private sector. There are lots of times I wish my salary was public so people would realize how little I actually get paid.

I made 55K( I will be a sahm in dec) DH is suffolk cop, his salary is public knowledge. I think it's a shame that ppl are force to show their salary :(

i don't care if ppl know my salary. BUT i know if salaries were public knowledge in my law firm... oh the drama. people get very testy about who makes what and who got a bonus and who didn't get a raise. i could only imagine what would ensue.

as i just found out, my dh's salary is on the seethroughny site. i mean i knew cops salaries were public knowledge, i guess i just didn't realize it would say his name too.

my salary is pretty much public knowledge for those who know where to look. doesnt bother me a ton, it is what it is!

I work for the DOE. My salary is public but it is not accurate for some reason. I make more then it says I do.

I don't care if people check it. Whatever, if you need to know what I make THAT badly go right ahead

DH's salary is not public so it would not give you a real picture anyway.

With teachers/public employees - it's usually scheduled based, so there aren't yearly "negotiations" where knowing other salaries would be problematic - as in the private sector.

Especially with what happened in Bell, CA, I am not offended about having my salary public. I can't imagine how many years, that town was getting away with those corrupt salaries.

I would not want my salary to be public.

I am paid well for my title...but there are circumstances that allow my pay to be higher than others in the same job. I could see others having an issue with it.

I am not an officer of my firm but I know I make more than some of them.

As a federal employee, my salary IS public information: approximately $105,000.

I'm an attorney with the U.S. Dept of Ed, with 6 years of legal experience, and another 5 years experience in HR. Not bad for federal service, but if I worked at a firm it would be double, if not triple that...

I work in the private sector so my salary isn't published to the public. Some companies do have grade levels & everyone knows the range of what staff make. Would I mind? If it was a company policy, then I'd accept it. If I wanted to private, I'd find a company that didn't make it public.

If I worked in the public sector, than yes I think it should be public knowledge. As I said in the other thread, it's a matter of checks & balances with public employees (thinking along the lines of politicians, nepotism, etc).

Just as teachers said for those that complain about the benefits for being a teacher, become a teacher if you want the same - I say if you're a public employee & don't want your salary published, go into the private sector then.

Also my assumption is the higher paid public employees have more experience, more education, have a higher level job or work OT - all of which warrants higher pay in my opinion.

I should also say - as someone in HR, I have everyone's salary info in my division - if they were made public, there would certainly be sniping over it. From experience, low-performing employees never see that they are low-performing & not contributing as the higher performers do.
